My "other" is winter riding. I love riding when everyone thinks you can't.

Except for 1 rec group ride (about 18 miles) a couple months ago, all my mileage is solo. I'm planning on doing the group ride again tomorrow. Not a big fan of group rides though.

My "other" is distance riding at a comfortable pace. It's a bit faster than "smelling the roses" but not quite at "training for a race" pace.

I ride for guts! Namely to lose mine! It is my exercise; I walked till it got so hot I was unwilling to fry myself. I still walk about a mile or two, instead of 6 to 8 and instead ride 13-20 with a 13mph breeze (self generated!).

For me it's the first four. Each one leads me to enjoy the others more. This morning I eased along for a few miles enjoying the morning and waiting for more light, rode hard for 14 and then joined a neighborhood group for a ride and conversation. Three out of four was very good, especially since the rest of the morning featured a board meeting.

Though I admire commuters and utility cyclists I ride for various varieties of enjoyment.

I like utility cycling and solo cycling for exercise and enjoyment. Small groups are great, but I do not care for riding in large groups. I am not, nor have I ever been, race material, so that's out.

Nonsensical rant or what, Bob. Maybe up or down your meds to suit.

Touring for me. It can be randonnees (in the traditional way of "fast touring") or hub-and-spokes, or overnighters or longer. All my rides these days are "small group"... with one other rider -- Machka, of course.

Long rides at a descent pace. I've been thinking of joining a group randonnee club in Seattle

Other than racing, I have not yet found a type of riding that I don't enjoy. I'm glad other people enjoy racing as I do like to watch them.

I clicked the first two. I used to ride hard and fast, and loved it! But right now, at this point in my life, with the economy the way it is, and not knowing if I'll have my hectic job from year to year, I NEED to slow down and recharge. And cycling helps with that. I look forward to the next ride and smile when I think about the last time I rode.

History rides, to find historic spots (lucky to live where I do for this).

Exploration rides, go places (on or off road) I've never been, sometimes I have to bring my bike a long way off for this.

I clicked commuting because that's the vast majority of my riding -- I haven't gotten to work other than by bike in a year and a half, and that was one day because I hadn't gotten studded tires yet.
I clicked training, because my son and I built our miles up this spring and summer by riding long miles together to prepare for RAIN 2011.
I clicked other, because the list didn't have touring, which I'd have to say is my favorite.

Ah. I agree, touring is a huge source of pleasure, but I counted touring as "smelling the roses". Not that it made much difference to the poll, because I ride in most of these styles at different times. There are only three I don't do. I don't mountain bike, I don't race (though now I'm retiring and will have time to train I might get into some veterans - you call them masters - races) and I tend to avoid "relaxed" group rides. Constantly riding at someone else's pace, stopping to regroup and so on detracts too much from my enjoyment.

Cycling is principally a solitary rather than a social activity for me. Groups of similar ability, or club rides in pacelines, are fine, but one of the joys of being on a bike is being alone with the bike and one's surroundings.

Somehow or other, the 10 choices allowed by the poll software never seem to cover all the major possibilities, and two I would have liked to add would be touring and "long-distance" cycling such as randonneuring. But, you folks covered that in the "other" category and thanks for doing that.

I also consider moderately fast century rides as my primary style of cycling. Other forms of cycling, such as training, fast solo rides and fast group rides are all just prep for century rides.

I put training down, but for me, training is mostly a winter sport, where I can hammerfest for an hour every couple of days so the legs don't turn to Jello by spring, I think next year though, the trainer will stay set up another 4-5 weeks then it did this year.

Smell the roses and challenging mountain biking. Not that the mountain biking is challenging nowadays- It is all hard. Far harder than it ever used to be before I cut back on it 5 years ago.

Except for 1 rec group ride (about 18 miles) a couple months ago, all my mileage is solo. I'm planning on doing the group ride again tomorrow. Not a big fan of group rides though.
DEK

You should try the Seminole Heights Club rides on the second and third Saturday's of the month. The third Saturday is the best one. It's longer and goes through some nice areas. No pace lines or haul butt riding, just a nice leisurely 12 and 18 mile ride through Tampa, Hyde Park and Davis Islands. I normally ride solo but I like the change of pace once in a while.
