Mavic Aksium - will I "fold them in half"?
Hi Guys,
I went into the LBS today to check out a Cannondale CAAD10 Ultegra. After being measured up as a 60cm the guy said at my weight I'd want to swap out the wheels for something sturdier...he said I'd "fold them in half in no time".
Don't get me wrong, I know I'm big. I'm 6ft 5 and 225...but a bike worth AUD$3000...shouldn't I be able to ride it without folding the wheels in half?
It comes with Mavic Aksium as standard. He was suggesting going up the Mavic line or changing to some eastern rims...
Advice, comments and suggestions welcome.

They are BOMB Proof I own them on my bike. They are not light or very aero but you will have zero problems.
If you do indeed have the cash upgrade. But I do not think they will be any problems.

Mavic Wheels are indeed known for some significant strength, I would have to +1 on calling Bull**** there. While you may be a large cyclist you are nowhere near the end of the bell curve when it comes to size.

Dont reckon you'll have a problem though you are on the heavy side for low spoke count wheels - not particularly so though. FWIW I once took all the spokes out of one of those wheels when it was time to scrap it, laid it on the ground and rested one side on a brick before jumping and stamping on it with the sole intention of "folding it in half" literally, to fit it in a bin. It took about 6 or 7 jumps to even put a small buckle in it - incredibly strong even with no spokes !!!

This is exactly why I buy exclusively online, fit myself to my own bike, and do all my own maintenance. I can't stand 9 out of 10 bike shop employees.

complete BS, I have those wheels on my bike, when I bought the bike I weighed 220 and we have some pretty damn rough roads around here (NE IL and SE WI), wheels spin true and have been nothing short of perfect.

I'm 4 inches shorter than you, but the same weight. My Aksiums have been fine for 1,500 miles, except for one broken spoke early on which had been damaged in a crash by the guy I bought them off. I rode the bike 12 miles with that broken spoke to catch a train home and the other spokes held up fine. Since I replaced the spoke there have been no further problems.

I'm 6'5" 215 and almost bought the same bike but was fitted to a 63cm. I could probably fit on a 60cm CAAD10, but with a bigger saddle-bar drop...

Moving "up" the Mavic prebuilt line will simply result in a wheel that isn't as strong. Ride the Aksiums. If you develop problems then move on to something more appropriate at your weight.

im 5'6", 250,000 lbs and i have raced them for over 120,000 earth miles and have only had to replace the rim tape once (for weight savings).

I started riding when I was 220 and my Aksiums are still true. I bought a new wheel set this past winter, but still use the mavins in bad or windy conditions. I have around 10k miles on the mavins and they are as true as the day I got them. (although I am now 35# lighter)
