how much ibuprofen do you take PRE-ride?

I sometimes take ibuprofen before and/or during rides and I’m sure others do as well so I was curious about how much other people take. Please no one panic. With my cycling and dosage it probably comes out to about 1200 mgs a week or less. Does anyone else take this much or am I the biggest doper?

None. Maybe if I am riding a century I will take one about halfway through, but that is rare...

I have done quite a few 15-20 mile rides now, not more than that. Never taken pills - don't plan to. I think this is a bit horrifying, frankly. (Horrifying may not be the best word - but frightening/grotesque/weird don't really describe it either). You seem to be taking way too many pills!

That kind of pain needn't be part of cycling:
~Get a pro-fit. Expensive, but entirely worth it.
~Try a bunch of saddles. Many dealerships have an exchange program, so you can keep trying different saddles until you find the perfect one.
~Consider trying yoga. Flexibility and body awareness are a huge part of it for me. I am faster, stronger, and more comfortable riding now at 43 than I was in my 20's.

Save your suffering for lactate threshold moments, like when you're riding people off your wheel, or beating younger riders up the mountain.

Pain is your body's way of telling you that you are overdoing it or that something is wrong. I know several people that took something for the pain and ended up making the problem worse.

2-3 before a 50-100 miler once a week. I'm 58 and tendonitis in my left elbow flares up occassionally. Once I'm warmed up after 12-15 miles I'm usually fine. 200 mg gel caps so the most I'm taking is 600 mgs.

I have taken pre-ride ibupro, but not as a matter of habit. I've had a couple of periods in my life where I was way behind in the spring time, and would use pre-ride ibupro at about 600mg for two to three hour rides. I've never dosed mid-ride, and almost never after, either. Not out of rational opposition, just habit.

If you feel the need to take pain relievers because of chronic pain, I'd suggest a doctor consultation to determine safe levels, because you can mess yourself up with that stuff if you over do it.

I'd be surprised if 1200mg/week was anywhere near the danger zone, but I'm not qualified to speak on the matter, that's for sure.

None. I don't think I've ever taken any before or during a ride. Maybe some after, once... I can't rule it out, but I can't think of any example either.

If it hurts, you're doing it wrong (unless you have a particular reason, like the guy with tendonitis).

I take 2 to 4 200mg before a ride. I'm very large and have had issues with my knee and ankle and the ibuprofens help.

I have also read that it helps with possible headaches from extreme heat while riding, which is the only reason I have taken it before.

Why are you taking this? If you are in this much pain, you need to figure out the real problem, not load your system with needless medication. You make it sound like your taking them for nourishment . . .

Yeah, what the heck ?!?!?!
It never occured to me to take any, and I'm a 50 year old fart doing 50-80 mile hilly rides & some races.

Ibuprofen does Kidney damage not liver damage.
Acetaminophen damages the liver not the kidneys.

Probably.

But on the slim chance he/she is serious ...

snookanglr ... if cycling hurts you that much, I'd suggest going to a bicycle shop and having them check the fit of your bicycle.

Some recent studies have shown that ibuprofen and similar NSAIDs interfere with the rebuilding/recovery process after workouts. Here's a few items on that topic. The first one concludes, “When you have inflammation and pain from an acute injury, in that situation, NSAIDs are very effective. But to take them before every workout or match is a mistake.”

https://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/0...ring-exercise/

https://fellrnr.com/wiki/NSAIDs_and_Running

https://sportsmedicine.about.com/od/m..._endurance.htm

For that reason, I try to avoid them. Being older, I know a number of very physically active guys who had severe osteoarthritis of the knee or hip necessitating eventual replacement. These guys were able to stay active using high doses of ibuprofen for years before finally getting the surgery.

Trolling. Absent an explanation, the "10-30 mile ride" stuff is ridiculous.

Maximum dose of ibuprofen is 800mg / dose. 2400mg / day. This maximum dose is by prescription only. Biggest concern with taking during a ride is that you should always take ibu with food. 600mg dose is for 6 hours and you are only riding about 2 hrs at the most. 1200mg / week should be no problem.

Bizarre. What studies have there been for such long term use?
