Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

beware your sports drinks; know what you're ingesting...

Weight is a major issue with me and if I don't monitor as closely as possible my input vs output caloric assessment, I can swell up like a tick overnight sending me into great discouragement.

Last week I did a local Fondo event. When I do centuries or substantial rides, I learned long ago to keep as well hydrated as possible and to eat along the way, so I disregard 'intake' during such events thinking I'll surely burn whatever excess calories up.

They had this new sports drink called Hammer. I guzzled the stuff thinking it was just another rendition of gatorade...yes, some calories, but I've always needed 'some' calories to remain vital on such rides.

To make a long story short, I could almost 'feel' myself puffing up in the car on the way home that day, even after riding a good 115 miles. Something was wrong. I 'felt' it; knew it. Sure enough, the next morning, I had somehow 'gained' a good 7 lbs from my previous tracking. Again, I felt it too; that 'stuffed tick' feeling. Usually, after centuries and long rides, I gain a sense euphoric 'lightness' and 'litheness' from having burned some 'flesh'.

I know, I know...water weight can swing widely from day to day...and actual body weight has probably changed only a few ounces one way or another. Not so this time. It's a week later and I remain a good 7 lbs over what I weighed before that Fondo ride.

I've been scratching my head in wonderment on this trying to figure what 'happened' to cause this very noticeable and observable 'change' in me. Ah...it dawned on me, that Hammer drink that I was guzzling all day long on that ride...and sure enough, I look up the ingredients, and it's loaded with carbohydrates and 'designed' for large caloric loading in small quantities. And I was guzzling the stuff.

Anyway, I thought I'd pass along a 'word to the wise' that perhaps we should take a closer look as the things we might be ingesting along the way on these rides. I take it for granted what I'm filling my water bottles with as being something harmless at best, and with things like gatorade, for me anyway, helpful [for that smaller calorie loading along the way].

This Hammer drink did a number on me for sure. It is so so demoralizing, for every pound I've lose is a major battle and struggle. Wow...7 lbs over night? Sounds impossible...but I keep daily graphs, charts, maps, you name it and I keep spreadsheets on EVERYTHING I consume [caloric content to cholesterol to carbs and fiber etc] dating back at least five years now. I rode that fondo, and the charts JUMPED upwards...and remain so. It HAD to be that Hammer sports drink.

So, know what they are feeding us out there....

How many calories per oz are we talking? 7lbs is what 24500 calories? More likely you retained a huge amount of fluids from all the excess salt you ingested.

Wow. Are you blaming the drink or yourself? Any energy drink/bar/gel can do that if you're over-consuming on your ride. Depending on your weight and effort and a few other variables, you were probably burning in the neighbourhood of 700-800 calories an hour. A rule of thumb is to refuel 300-400 calories per hour. If you gained seven pounds overnight.......

I'm assuming you're talking about HEED by Hammer Nutrition. It has amino acids in it, and different carbs than Gatorade. You weren't use to it, and it upset your gut.

Personally, I detest HEED. others love it.

7 lbs in a day? I believe we've found a solution to America's underweight problem.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say you did not gain 7 pounds in one day.

Well as someone who is also on the path to losing weight, I can personally tell you that I think "oh I just rode 100 miles so I can eat pizza and ice cream all day long" is a horrible thing. I always gain weight after a long charity ride because of this. I don't know how much "guzzling this stuff" is, but 7 lbs may not only be from the drink. You might have also overeaten after the ride trying to recover.

Hammer is basically just maltodextrin. One or two scoops per water bottle, which equates to 100-200 calories. In order for the Hammer to put on 7lbs you'd have to have been drinking tens of gallons of the stuff. And that while cycling 115 miles. I just don't see how it's possible that you didn't sweat the water and burn the calories from the Heed. Makes no sense at all.

bwt, what makes you think that Hammer has more calories than Gatorade? It really depends on which Gatorade drink you're referring to.
