Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First Annual TOSRV Dirt

TOSRV is an annual 2 day ride, centuries both days from outside Tallahassee Florida to Albany Ga and back. TOSRV stands for Tour of Southern Rural Vistas, and is an homage to the original TOSRV in Ohio.

This year they added TOSRV Dirt, which starts closer to Albany, and is routed on dirt roads for as much of the course as possible. It seemed like 60% or so of the mileage was on dirt, but a greater percentage of the time given the slower pace on dirt.

The course was approximately 75 miles each day, and could be done o eeither a cross bike or a MTB. With dry conditions, it would be rideable on a road bike with 25-28 mm tires.

Weather was beautiful both days, but it rained the day before which made Saturday a long slug through penaut butter consistency mud. Sunday the roads were drier and it was faster.

By using dirt roads, it was a great course with pretty rural scenes of farmland, forest, Pecan groves. Even when it was on road, the backroads linked up by dirt roads made for a more remote feel, and virtually no car traffic.

Great ride that I would definitely recommend for next year.

Looks like a really good tour. May give me incentive to make my next vintage frame build a gravel bike.

Do expect to hear from Charlie Pace's lawyer about copyright infringement on the TOSRV brand.

They've been doing the regular TOSRV South for a long time, at least 20 years IIRC.

At first I thought the name was a bit lame, given the derivitive nature. However, the back story apparently is that the guy who organized TOSRV South moved down from Ohio, and wanted to create a similar type ride, so kinda imitation as a form of flattery.

doing the real TOSRV here in a couple weeks. did saturday only last year as my first time, and had a blast. glad i skipped sunday, as it was bad weather.

got my brother (who doesnt ride) doing the first 50 to the lunch stop as part of a bet/challenge we have with each other. its gonna be a SLOW first 50, but im hooking up with friends at the lunch stop to finish with them. bad part is, me and my brother have to leave at 6am to get to the lunch stop around the same time as them, and they're leaving at ~815-830
