Ever since I got Lizard Skin bartape, I wear gloves only 50% of the time.
Best tape ever.
I kind of like the new bartape by SRAM but its a little rough.

It's up to you and your hands, but I would suggest you at least consider a pair of very thin, lightweight gloves. Very helpful to wipe debris/glass off your tires while on the roll...and if, god forbid, you have a crash...well, you know.

And not needing to clean debris from your tire, and not needing to wipe snot, or sweat.

One of my teammates flat out refused to wear gloves. Felt better on the bars.
He went down in a minor crash Tuesday night, slid out. If he follows my road rash treatment I'm sure his road rash will be gone by Sunday. His hand though is pretty ground up.
He's buying a bunch of gloves now. Long finger no less. If you don't like padding then get the Mechanix gloves or similar. They saved my hands in a hard tumble (unexpected of course).
Skimming your fingertips is a real pain. It's not agonizing, just low grade and always in your face. Imagine 2-3 paper cuts on the pad of each finger. Now try to type. Or use a fork. or zip up your pants. Use your phone. Etc. It's super aggravating.
It's also nice to ride without a helmet, I'm sure it's more comfy not to wear a seat belt, etc, but it's not like you ever plan to crash, it happens unexpectedly.

for anyone that wants very minimalistic gloves with minimal/zero padding:
short finger: Giro Zero
long finger: Giro Rivet
I have both and they are awesome.

Hamburger Helper hands as I call it. especially when I see twonks riding motorcycles without gloves.
Ive been turfed off bikes and motorcyles all kinds of times, sure as heck cant imagine doing it without gloves on.
actually I can imagine it, hence my preference for gloves.

I used to wear all kindsa special stuff and put special gee-gaws like cyclocomputers and the like on my bikes all the time.
Nowadays that's only for special occasions. Gloves only when it's sub 50 degrees F or so.

It happens unexpectedly, but it isn't completely unpredictable, even to the person crashing. Sometimes you ride in a conservative manner, sometimes you push the envelope a bit and ride at (or just beyond) the edge of your skills. Unexpected things happen and I'm not saying a person can avoid crashing their entire life by not wanting to, but if you ride a bike a lot, you learn where your limits are, not to ride over wet metal grating or paint in the rain, and a lot of other things like that, basically to avoid taking risks that new riders may not realize they're taking.

I used to use lizardskins too but now use the Prologo OneTouch. Way better. Way more cushion given the lesser thickness.
Same tape as Orica Greenedge, if you're familiar, for reference. It looks cool too.

I admit since my conversion to the "always wearing gloves" theory I've ridden without gloves, once even in a (training) race. I had some excuse but they're still only excuses, and excuses don't help me if I happen to go down and there happens to be some broken glass there or something.

I rarely wear gloves when not racing. Even then I seem to forget half the time. And last time I crashed, I was wearing gloves, which were shredded on the BACK of the glove. Seems that my hands were still on the bars when I hit. So, there's that.
