Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bee Stings to Flats Ratio

Mine is 3:0 this summer. At least with the bees I don't have to stop so guess I can't complain.

What's your score?

No stings. I don't detail flat numbers... too risky.

Last Thursday was yard waste pick up along with the trash collection. My wife does all the gardening and had taken a couple of yard bags to the curb, but there was one more that had been leaning against the garage for most of the summer. I grabbed it and made it about 10 yards before realizing it was vibrating due to the now enraged yellow jacket nest inside it. I dropped it and ran down the drive way desperately swatting the numerous attackers. I took 16 stings in all. That was luck as for some reason I put jeans on that morning. Had I been wearing shorts as I did every other day that week it would have been at least double that.

Not bike related, I just wanted to share.

That sucks. I disturbed a nest once while mowing but only got a couple stings.

1/7 - Had a bee or wasp or something fly right at my face and get tangled into my glasses and sting me on the temple. 7 flats.

3-2. Last week pulling up to a picnic bench I unzipped my shirt collar. As soon as I did, a bee stung me near my collar bone. I don't know if it was there already and I pissed it off or if it was a fly by.

The first one of the year one flew into my helmet and stung my head. The second one was just a bee hitting my arm while I was riding.

0 bee stings and too many flats to keep track of. (IIRC, I ordered a 4-pack of tubes in January, and they are all gone by now.) I guess I don't smell tasty for bees?

1 bee sting while out riding, and it's the ride where I set my peak 5-9 minute power of the year. I have been stung in 4 races throughout the years and I have gone 1st, 1st, 2nd, and 4th in those races. Something about getting stung by a bee makes me feel really good when riding.

I've had 3 flats. 2 of them in a race when a guy thought it would be funny to throw thumbtacks all over the road. Over a dozen of us flatted out that day. The other one I found some dirt roads on the Outer Banks so I was having some fun tearing it up and flatted.

0:0, but I am just getting started. I carry my shot just in case I do get stung by something. I am allergic to death.

I got stung the other day - was JRA on my commute to work and then splut - something lands in my helmet vent and IMMEDIATELY i felt the seering pain of a thousand titty-twisters on my forehead. Emergency stop, lots of swatting and rubbing and ripping my glasses/helmet off... I had a headache for most of the day after that and there's still a lump 3 days later.

1:0. Effing bee bounced off of my arm at 25 MPH and nailed me in the thigh on the rebound. A red welt persists three days later.

0:9 I hate flats, but I think I would hate the bee stings just as much.

4 or 5 flats. 1 bee sting. I don't really care about flats, but I am allergic to bee stings so it requires me to stop and use my Epi-Pen. It's an intramuscular injection right into your quadriceps so it just hurts like hell, but it beats the alternative.

Must be suffering from colony collapse disorder around where I ride as I've had no bee stings for nearly a year.

So far people reporting no bee stings are myself (So. California), one person from Sacramento (the other person from Sacramento reported 1:5), and one person from Arizona. And the person from Arkansas reported 1:7. Everyone else keeps getting stung all the time. Weird.

This is what happens to me. They fly into my arm and seem to react instinctively to the impact. If I'm going less than 15mph they either bounce off or land but not sting and I can shoo them away. At higher speeds they seem to sting on impact.
