The Weinmann could be a practice prototype??....or maybe more likely just a Fan's "period" attempt to emulate what he might have seen in a pro race or maybe just pics....Point is, it turns out that even the worst looking drillium might have a basis, surprisingly set by people we would never suspect of doing so.....

Why? Those give you really funny tan lines or holes. Ask me how i know. The big hole right in front of the wrist is really noticeable. A girl ask me in high school why I have funny tan. A big dark patch in front of my wrist and the typical riding shorts just right above the knee. This was back in the mid / late 80s when shorts were shorter then they are today. Actually a lot shorter.

Yep. The objective was to drill out as much as possible to reduce weight, while not going so far over the top that the structural integrity of the item being drilled is compromised. Here is a guy that is still doing it, with much more professional looking results: https://www.drilliumrevival.com/

Weinmann 500s were already one of the lightest of calipers back in the day. And they flexed pretty much IME. I cringe to think what a drillium set would do.

Not the best work....ok, not even close...but not the worst either.
In the 70's I was guilty of such acts, being a teenager with a power drill in hand, a lot of us copied what we saw and could not afford to do ( or had the talent to do) It was fun and made you bike unique (good or bad) didn't really matter.
And for that, those brakes represent a particular niche and would be kinda cool on a mid-level bike boom era bike, just for what they are, not a work of art; just a kid, a power drill and the desire to go fast.
