Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First crash. Man, this sucks!

Today I had my first accident. I was riding about 17/18 mph and went over a rail road track that crosses the road at an odd angle like 45 degrees. It was a little wet out and my front tire went in the railroad groove and went left and I fell off the back of my bike towards the right. Landed right on my right ass cheek and got some nasty road rash. A few other scrapes and bruises but nothing major other than an extremely sore cheek.

Has anyone else had a deep bruise and how long to recover?

I can barely sit down at least not without a great deal of pain

PS: The bike is fine.

Depends on how old you are and what kind of shape you are in.

I'm in terrible shape and mashed my knee up several weeks ago and it's still bruised and tweaked. Just take it slow and it will recover.

It varies. It can be tender for a few weeks..

PS: The bike is fine.
This is the important part, glad to hear it!

2 months ago shoulder impact at 30 mph and still have deep tissue pain! It can stick around for some time in some cases. Hopefully yours will not be as bad as mine.

My first spill I took on my bike. I was riding down a hill and when it started to even out a little I decided to show off a little for my friend that was right behind me. I ended up getting my self throw to the ground at a pretty good speed. I bruised my side, split my elbow, and jacked up my wrist pretty good. This was my first crash and it kept me off my bike for quite some time because I had to wear a cast. Didn't stop me from finishing the ride back to the Jeep though hahahaha.

Bruises can last some time. There are no fun either especially on the butt. Have done the same thing riding my skateboard. No fun at all.

Slipped on some metal plates while riding in the rain on the
George Washington bridge(New York city) a few years back.
It was on a tight turn and I was going maybe 10mph. Got up
checked myself and bike; everything seemed fine and I continued
riding to my job. Few hours later, my lower back and side hurt
so much; I asked my boss if I can leave early. I was sore and
in pain for about a week.

I had a friend do the same thing on wet RR-tracks. They are extremely slick when wet and you should try to go over them at a 90* angle if possible. He broke his femur.

The following day will likely hurt more, so if you suspect further damage, you should go in for xrays. Hopefully, its just a bruise. I'd suspect at least 2-3 weeks for full function, but really depends on many other factors.

Tegaderm by 3M is good for helping road rash to heal. It allows oxygen in for the skin to heal but keeps out water so you can shower with it on.

My last crash was a year ago and I wasn't even going very fast, but I still got some nasty bruises that took several weeks to heal. Even after the bruises faded the underlying tissue was sore. It wasn't painful enough to keep me off the bike, though.

If you develop a hemotoma (pocket of blood under the skin; feels like a blob of jell-o) it can take a couple months to completely resolve. Hemotomas can move due to gravity, too. It may start out up by your hip where the impact happened and eventually migrate down your thigh.

PS: The bike is fine.
Well, that's the the important thing, right?

I feel your pain. I have injured my right cheek two times, however I was on Inline-skates, but the damage is the same. Both times it was only real painfull 2-3 days. However, I could still feel it (deep bruise ) 10 to 20 days. TIP: Stay as active as possible without making it hurt worst, and it will go away faster. Good luck, also be carefully of painted lines when wet.

Well, let's see, 4 weeks ago today went down in a low speed crash when the front tire caught in a crack. Hit the pavement hard, badly sprained hip flexors. Just stopped using a walker three days ago. It will be a few more weeks before I get back on the bike.

Yeah I'll see how this turns out tomorrow. Right now it's kinda numb but very painful. Thank goodness I didn't crack my tailbone or do something even worse. I'm definately walking my bike over those track shall I ever decide to take that route again. I really can't see me sitting on a seat again any time soon with the way I'm bruised.

Here's the scene of the accident. Talk about a weird angle to cross a road.

When you saw the red guy splatted on the road with the sad face, it should have been a give away that bad things could happen there, or tied to turn square to the tracks, Andy

Glad it is nothing more than road rash and bruising! I went down in a crit on the same spot last month. Fractured my hip and had surgery. I still have bruises and will be out for 3 months. Most of my bruising is gone though and I suspect yours will be gone by the months end.

This is important because you'll heal but the bike won't.

Depending on the extent of injury, there's nothing unusual about wounds taking weeks to months to heal.

At least bruises usually mean there's blood flow.. if there's blood flow, things will heal.

My favorite part of healing (sic) is when it feels itchy inside...

Same thing happened to me and guy behind went over his bars too. Landed on my shoulder. Bike was fine except bent rear derailleur hanger. Sad thing was we where 32 miles from a out and back. We bleed the whole way home. Really sore for week. Hope thats the worst accident I ever have.

Back on 6/23/13, was in a small group, and drafting at 20ish....rider behind me over lapped my back tire in the inside and caused a crash. Broken collarbone. Sucks...I just got back on the bike this week. Still haven't gotten back to work (electrician, so most work involves labor and overhead work). Thank god for Aflac, and that no cars came by at that moment!!! Count your blessings on a bad bruise bro...

My advice would be to HTFU.

I wrecked in early July, and didn't miss a day. The hematoma took about six weeks to heal, but the pain was gone after a few days.
