what sound while riding causes fear?
For me it is the sound of a diesel engine. I was riding on a narrow road with out a shoulder climbing for about a mile when first I see a "oversize" load lead truck drive by.....soon after followed by what must have been the biggest D9 tractor I ever saw. The sound of the engine and the near miss of the wide load almost caused me to shart.

Personally, I don't fear a diesel engine nearly as much as I do an SUV driven by someone who can't handle it. That trucker has much more driving experience and will suffer much harsher repercussions from an accident than the SUV driver. I've also found them to be more courteous as a rule too. They give you the room you need, don't needlessly honk behind you, etc.

The noise of small children near cars, with families, behind bushes or sidewalks. You can't see em' and you are frightened that they will squirt out into your path.

The deep throaty exhaust of a truck coming up from my left rear.

The sound of me hammering the pedals should put fear in the hearts of all men!

Toward the end of the story ... reading from the paragraph that starts, "But just to liven things up a bit, all of a sudden out of the darkness ..."

That's the whole point of climbing up !
Then race the other guys down, trying not to lose grip on the corners, and hoping no cars are coming the other way.

The loud bang of the tube rupturing on a fast decent or a fast group ride. And hopefully not on the front tire.
Or the loud pop of a broken spoke, or worse, two broken spokes resulting from a broken hub shell. This happened recently, but fortunately during the first few mile warmup.

There is this Lassa Apso one of my routes, little bugger terrifies me.
No really what scares the crap out of me is the whoosh and the feel of air brushing past my ear from a SUV with these oversized yard long mirrors. I see decapitations in my thoughts every time that happens. Don't think my helmet will help me with this problem.
