Must See Bike Shops in Bay Area
Hey All,
My wife is attending a seminar next Friday (Nov 1) in Concord (Pleasant Hill actually). I'll have some time to kill while I'm waiting for her. I figured I'd check out Rivendell since I'll be close by. Any other "must see" shops in the area? Willing to travel as far as mid-peninsula (say as far south as Menlo Park/Palo Alto).
I'm not really in need of anything, so open to suggestions.
Thanks,
KB

I met Eddy Merckx at Missing Link in Berkeley... but barring him, no reason to go there.
Instead... go for a ride up Mount Diablo.

Last time we went to Above Category, before their move to Sausalito, they had a great selection of Pegoretti and a few other high end bikes. Great shop, though the old location was pretty small. Rapha is SF is pretty cool, if you like their gear. It's worth a stop in my opinion

In no particular order:
Livermore Cyclery in Livermore. Big store, big selection, knowledgable staff. Some very cool older bikes hanging up on display.
Stone's Cyclery in Alameda. Old-timey and plenty of classic eye candy
American Cyclery in SF. Ditto, although Stone's has more classic frames and American has more classic components.
A Bicycle Odessey in Sausalito. Good combination of old and new.
Or just go ride up Mt. Diablo . . . .

Sorry, my road bike currently is out of commission, and I'm not sure I'll have it back in order by then. For the time being it's just the fixed gear, and I'm not sure I want to try to tackle Mt. Diablo without a gear lower than 70 inches. Next time though . . .

Depends what you want. I would have said Rapha and Public and Chrome in SF, along with Huckleberry and American Cyclery. Even stores like Above Category mostly sell goods that you can find online, but the ones I mentioned tend to have their own things too. Timbuk2 in Hayes Valley and the other SF messenger bag shops likewise. Public Bikes... nice neighborhood. Buying anything for the Mrs?

Crank-2 in Pleasanton is a very nice shop. Lots of gear, several brands of tandems (Co-Motion, daVinci, Santana, KHS). They also sell Volagi singles.

Stopped by there one time during the summer. I didn't have much time then, but you're right they do seem to have a nice shop. It's kind of on the way down to my folks' house, so I keep thinking I'll just stop off when I'm on my way down or on the way back. Never seems to happen though.
