Snapped weld on Raleigh Portage rear cantilever boss
Any thoughts on how to get rear brakes back in action? college student, low budget... but i really like this bike.
Boss snapped right at the weld (must have been rotten, barely withstood any torque). Have all of the pieces.
Any way to attach it without welding?

Replace the brake with a dual-pivot caliper. You may need to remove the remaining boss.

A bike shop or frame builder should be able to braze on a new cantilever boss.
A Raleigh Portage has a 650B wheelset. Today there are some good tire choices available for it. At the time Raleigh built it, 650B seemed to be on the way out.
That's no longer true.

Sell the Portage on Ebay and buy a different bike. Even with a broken canti stud, it could fetch $800, which would buy something newer with 700c wheels with enough left over for a few school books and a couple pitchers of beer.

This is really good advice, if you want a more modern bike and/or need the money. On the other hand, you say you really like the Portage, and the Portage is a nice -- and for some, quite desirable -- vintage tourer (which is why you could get a pretty penny for it, even with a broken brake boss). My guess is that the good folks on the C&V (Classic & Vintage) subforum would be interested in your "dilemma." Me? I'd probably have the Portage repaired, assuming that it's in good enough condition to justify it and that I had the cash available. One last thing: Do you actually ride this bike at college? It might be safer, from a theft standpoint, to ride a cheapo beater at school and save your good bike (the Portage or another) for summers, etc.
