help with frame identification
hello, can anybody help me identify this frame and the steel type please? (see pics)
it was a good find on ebay, looks like quality.. but the seller didnt know what it is.. and i cant find it...
it looks like a merckx or a gazelle, but i doubt it
it has "brev campagnolo" on front drop out and the forks have a reynolds stamp
the rear drop outs have "allez" stamped into them
BB has two letters.. "HB" and that's all i can see
the paintwork is a little rough
i havent taken the headset off yet to see if there is a frame number in there
any ideas? many thanks...

It does look quality, good find! I know nothing but the recent 40th anniversary of Specialized Allez road series? No, that would be too simple.

Fork might not be original to the frame. Looks decent, though.

^I agree, based on what seem to be Gipiemme dropouts, stamped with Allez , yes (but that shape looks like GPM) and the Campy forkends. Normally these would match brands.
How about some pics of the seat cluster and brake bridge, better view of the headlugs...etc...

yeah i figured the frames and fork were a mis-match..im not quite up yet on the frame stamps... "allez" and what that would mean in terms of frame materials or models... Campy i recognise as decent and also reynolds.. so the forks im happy with.... the headset i dont think is anything to speak of and i doubt that belongs to the frameset either.

well I thought additional pics would help but they haven't helped ME...I can see a mix of frame bits that point to this being a good quality frame but nothing that triggers an ID. What threading in the BB? Given the modern cartridge unit it has to be either BSC or Italian, so I think it being a French made frame is out . The cable routing and water bottle bosses make me think it's early-to-mid-'80s.

thanks for that, im not sure how to tell italian threads from BSC or french.. i take it they are opposite directions?
i think its is an okay frame.. i didnt take the BB out last night but i took the forks off and it was around 2800gms, so i assume without the BB itd be about 2400 or 2500.. which isnt too bad... im probably going to strip the paint off and respray.. but tha'tll take a whiles to get around to.. meanwhile im itching to see how it rides.. so im torn between building it up and strippingthe paint and waiting

it may be a 68mm shell that was heavily "faced", but there appear to be markings on the flange of the driveside cup, at least I can read Shimano...if it says 1.37" x 24 it;s BSC and LH threads in the driveside, if it says 36 x 24 it's Italian and RH threads in the driveside...both are RH threads in the non-driveside.

yes it does say 1.37 x 24 so i guess its not italian..i take it BSC stands for some kind of British thread?... the cup does extend outwards but that doesnt appear to be part of the frame to me,, i was measuring it from both sides of the metal and that came to 66+ mm

Yes, it's standard English thread. BSC = "British Standard Cycle." Bottom bracket shell widths can vary widely, and should never be taken as an indication of thread type.

Italian thread shells are a full millimeter wider in diameter than English or French thread shells, so Italian thread cups won't even start to thread into an English/French shell, and English or French cups will just fall into an Italian thread shell without engaging any threads.
