Favorite Treat?
So it's a hot summer day, and you pull into a town, ready for a pause that refreshes. It's past lunch and too early for dinner, but you're in the mood to treat yourself to something delicious that's impractical to pack. What do you choose?

For a snack before dinner, I like a piece or two of fried chicken. I am not a big ice cream fan, but I do love me a good huckleberry milk shake.
And beer.
And beer.

Local treat, usually local fresh fruit. I was touring toward Salem, Oregon in August and rolled into an orchard fruit stand selling peaches. I was there for a half hour eating peaches and chatting with the farmer who raised them. He had me sample the four varieties that he grows, it was a real treat on so many levels. There are many small family wineries in that area too, also a treat.

Huckleberries are everywhere in the northwest, the shakes made from fresh hucks are indeed a treat. Go to western Montana in late summer, they are everywhere along the road.

Picked and ate some fresh ones while backpacking in Glacier N.P. It was July, so they weren't quite ready yet.

Ice cream and a jug of cold water under a shade tree. I love Stewarts ice cream in upstate NY, a pint of Adirondack Bear Claw/Paw is my favorite.

Ice cream is the natural choice for me. But I think mostly because the old Dairy Queen type ice cream places allow for ordering and eating while remaining outside. And if it's summer... I'll likely be sweaty. But I also really like the bump from an old fashion cup of coffee! Of course it's not as strong a stimulant as some others.... but it's perfectly legal... and that's important too.
Also... I am genetically predisposed to eat donuts when taking a break. My Dad was a policeman.

I love the idea of fried chicken as a pre-dinner treat. I'm wondering if you also enjoy second breakfast, a la, "The Hobbit"?

Still ice cream for me. Ice cream got me in trouble early in my relationship. My now wife once asked me if I loved her more than ice cream, I couldn't answer but the hesitation was bad enough.

Now, I get out for 8 or 9 day trips at the most. If I am eating properly, I can usually get buy on a light breakfast, lunch, pre-dinner snack and dinner. Rode across PA last month. One day I had to carry all my food for the day from near the beginning of the day's ride, and there was climbing involved. Meals were pretty light that night so the next morning I felt I needed to stop for a second breakfast once I reached a town.

It depends on the country and region I'm visiting. In Thailand, a Singha beer. In Laos, a beer Lao. In Mexico, a papaya licuado. In France, an almond croissant. In Sri Lanka, fresh coconut water.
BTW, huckleberries are blueberries, usually wild ones.

Ah, well I've had blueberries, but not a blueberry shake. If I'm in Wisconsin, then I'll have a cheese curds and brat. If I'm in Illinois, a Chicago-style hot dog. In Minnesota, then lefse; Iowa, pork chop on a stick.

In order of preference.
1 Local treats, what ever they are. No objection, but no alcohol during day ride.
2 Local fruits in season.
3 Ice cream.
