Front Derailleur question

Hi,

Currently I have a 28-38-48 setup. I was thinking of changing to 30-39-50 setup, would the derailleur work with this as its not massively bigger?

thanks for the help,

Most likely yes. It will need to be raised on the seat tube by a small amount to maintain the cage/big ring clearance and then the adjustments should be double checked for their still being correct. Depending on how close to the minimum chain length is currently on the bike the chain might need a link more length. Andy.

Seems like a lot of expense for a relatively small change.
Unless the old crank is worn out.......
You may need a different BB too.

+1 If you can get a great deal on the larger range crankset I can understand it, otherwise I think it's a waste of time and money.

Thanks for the replies.

The big ring on the old crank is getting pretty worn, unfortunately its not possible to replace without replacing the whole crankset. I can get a good value 50-39-30 option for £20.

I've often thought that a 30-40-50 is the perfect triple range......

Much depends on the cogs on the back + tire size.
Range isn't everything if you have ranges you can't/don't use.

Just look for "a good value 28-38-48".
IF you can find the same model, you don't have to deal with replacing the Bottom Bracket. Have you considered THAT expense?

I have looked for the same size but thought that a slightly bigger gear wouldn't be a bad thing. I would still buy 28-38-48 if it were necessary or better value or whatever. Why would the bottom bracket need to be replaced? Both the old and (potentially) new crankset are square taper.

Most likely the FD will work without issue... but it depends on the specific FD too, you can't expect definitive answers from an online forum when you aren't posting the specific model numbers!

Cranksets can take different spindle lengths depending on where the chainrings run in lateral relationship to the area where the crank arm seats on the spindle. More recent cranks take a shorter spindle because the chainrings are further out in relationship to the seating area.
