Helping out another commuter

Today as I was nearing my last stretch towards home, I saw a young guy fiddling with his rear derailer. It turns out the upper pulley had fallen off; the screw had unscrewed itself. He had no tools, a beautiful but tattered vintage truss frame, steel rims, and the worst derailer you can imagine. He was puzzled by the routing of the chain, so I helped him out.

After a bit of fiddling and screwing it back together, we discovered that the washer-bushing thingies that go in the center of the pulley had fallen off, too. He found them within 10 meters of the bike, fortunately, and we put it back together again.

Then I adjusted his limit screws; the derailer was dropping the chain past the big sprocket, and not letting the chain onto the small sprocket. The young man was *really* thankful about that! I told him to oil his chain ASAP (it was so dry it was actually shiny).

Happy to help

I can help with a flat, putting the chain back on, or adjusting brakes... but putting a derailer back together? You probably don't want my help. I'd let you use my phone.

Good job.

I seem to give away about one patch kit a year.
