Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Oakleys...Damn!

Despite my having a perfectly good pair of Tifosi Logic glasses,
the pull is strong. The temptation is growing ever more.

I made a BIG mistake in trying on a pair of Oakleys.
Now, I NEED these Oakley Flak Jacket XLJ's...

Bought Jawbones a couple weeks ago to replace some old Mframes. Huge difference for the better.

i also have the flak jackets and really like them. i got them free and would probably be unlikely to purchase them if i had to pay full price. don't get me wrong, they are very nice, just not sure they're nice enough to warrant the asking price.

One word, clarity. I have the Radar Range. I have a pile of 'other' decent glasses sitting in beautiful cases that I'll probably never use again.

That speaks a lot for a set of shades.
I can still remember how clear the set I tried were.
Again, my Tifosis are great (compared to the lower end glasses).
But I know that if I bought Oakleys, they would make me faster.

Flack jackets have a larger profile and a bit more coverage. The half jackets are better for small faces. Also of note is that Flack jackets seem to do better with hats because the earpiece is thin and vertical. The half jacket's earpieces are a bit wider and often get in the way of hats. I have a pair of Flack jackets with the regular dark lens and am going to get an XLJ lens with better contrast for overcast days. As an added bonus the lenses shed water like no tomorrow and are way better than tifosi in that respect. The lenses are also quite a bit more durable than my Tifosis.

This is about the tenth time I have posted this but my Jawbones were the SINGLE most important cycling purchase I made last year. I couldn't live without them. I switch lenses and ride at night with them and they are light, clear and have total coverage. I think I spent $175 for them and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

FYI - the Half Jacket earpieces also interfere with the side profile of some of the Specialized helmets. The Decibel was really comfortable, but I wasn't willing to replace the Half Jackets.

Can you define the reasons Jack? I ride with M frames and have always loved them.
Thanks.
PS: A good review of the new Jawbones:
https://bikehugger.com/post/view/firs...s-oakley-jawbo

Biggest thing with me and why I have always appreciated M frames is..field of vision vertically when riding in the drops. Sounds like the Jawbones were designed with this in mind...frame is very high naturally allowing good vision in the drops.

Question I have to prescription wearers is...unlike the M frame, is the prescription lens of the Jawbones the entire lens unlike the localized center part of the lens like on a M-frame? Looks like it from the article.

Is there any reasoning behind arguing that Jawbones are better or is it just typical fanboyism? I prefer not having a frame below the lens to obstruct vision.

The new oakley ten is nice and pretty cheap. They're pretty similar to jawbones for half the cost.

I've have 4 pairs and to me for riding Jawbone>Split Jacket>Radar>Flak Jacket.

The Flak Jacket is my favorite off the bike pair of glasses I've ever owned. It's great for day to day around town stuff. But there's just not enough lens coverage on the bike.

The Jawbone is my favorite on the bike because it has the lens coverage of the Radar and the ear stems are much more comfortable and shorter which is a big deal for my small head. The Radars seem to pinch my temples pretty tightly. The fact that the ear stems are longer means they hit the side of my helmet and can sometimes slip down during rides. I wouldn't say the Radar's aren't comfortable, but they Jawbone's are just more comfortable. As far as the frame, it's a non issue because of the lens coverage. The only sport where I find it's a problem is golf. But on the bike it has honestly never crossed my mind.

Hydrophobic coating and lens changes are all gimmicks IMHO. The Radar and Flak Jacket have the same optical clarity and all seem to get equally coated in sweat if you let them. But the Jawbones are the best cycling glasses for me.

Thanks.
If I had to sum it up, it would be that Jawbone's combine the comfort of the Flak Jacket with the lens coverage of the Radar.

I love "stuff" like that.
Well worth the investment.
I've noticed that few people complain about Oakleys.
And almost all of those complaints were just "fit" issues.
But the quality is definitely there.

That's one of the reasons I personally prefer rimless glasses...field of vision.
That and that it's easier to wipe sweat from them (I sweat a lot).

If I can get prescription lenses, maybe I can get my health insurance to cover them for me.

$100. Nice entry-level price for Oaks.
Definitely looks like a trickle-down receiver.

Coincidentally, I also found Half-Jacket XLJ's for $100. as well.
But I think I"m going to go with the Flak Jackets as the "healthy" medium.
I tend to usually get 2nd tier stuff from the best brand names so
that I can get benefits of their best stuff at more affordable prices.

Radar > Jawbone > Flak Jacket XLJ

I have all three sets. The XLJ's are a bit small for cycling but they are excellent glasses. I love the Jawbones but they do block visibility because of the nature of the full frame. But you can change lenses easier than the rest. Just for riding, the Radar's are my favorite.
