Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Envious of bikes, parts that you can't afford?

I finished my Scattante built mostly with 105 parts , old sora shifters- which work great.
Cheap heavy but strong wheels.
Looks hot blue accents all over but here is the rub. It weighs 22lb.
I took it out for a short ride and it handles well and its fast (relative what I experienced)
Part of me Wants something more lighter but rational part of me thinks "you can't afford the light stuff"
True after paying mortgage, bills, kids expenses little is left over.Perhaps ignorance is bless? I should probably never ride a CF light bike because once I do I'll be hooked and that would put me in debt.
I guess I'll just ride my 22lb bike and be happy thinking in 70's or even 80's race bikes weighed that much probably.

Thinking of upgrading the wheels (once saved enough)to
Blackset Race 11 Wheel Set 1495g (thanks for the forum for this find)
$329
That should cut 2lb

Its not that I can't afford upgrades - I just feel guilty about the grand expense for marginal-at-best performance gains.

Every cycling enthusiast I've ever known in my life has always been envious of that they can't afford.

It's the nature of the beast.

Don't upgrade just for the sake of dropping weight because a lighter bike isn't going to make you a better or faster cyclist. Just keep riding your bike. You'll eventually discover better and more justifiable reasons to upgrade...then factor weight into your upgrade decisions.

You can shave off a couple of pounds by removing the seat and seatpost.

Thanks I'll do this for a year and see if I need to upgrade.

I'd use an angle grinder to thin out the tubes on the bike (they make them thicker than needed for liability reasons) and do the same thing on the stem and handlebars (see previous parenthesis).

find a bike calculator online (like this one: https://bikecalculator.com/veloUS.html) and do a few quick calculations to figure out how much difference a pound or two of bike weight actually makes. it really isn't much, unless you're riding up a really steep hill. people make such a big deal out of weight, but it's relatively insignificant compared to training, aerodynamics, strategy, etc.

and i assume Sprocket Man was kidding, since it seems like you didn't catch that.

Good lookin' bike. I like white bikes with blue accents.

It's been my experience so far that upgraditis is never ending. The longer you can avoid it, the better off you & your bank account will be.

But....umm.... has anyone told you about BF's picture taking rules?

Horizontal crank arm? I thought it was supposed to be aligned with the seat tube.

Great, now we are gonna have to get Pcad to clarify.

Who's gonna gonna take one for the team and say his name three times?

There's not much bike stuff that I "can't afford". I have to budget my expenses and decide whether I want to spend a $100 or a $1,000 or $10,000 on the bike. And if I elect to ride the $1,000 bike and pass on the $10,000 bike, that doesn't keep me up at night, I'm fine with that decision.

I have that itch real bad but every time a guy passes me on an old steel bike, the need to itch it diminishes.

Being as I'm a C&V freak, my financed savings towards a brand new road bike finds itself always derailed when a sweet classic comes along that I want... I get envious, then I remember how much I love my bikes.

told you the frame wasnt light

some days i wish i could justify replacing my scattante xrl frameset but then i remember that a 17lb bike isnt what is slowing me down.

I can honestly say I'm 100% NOT envious of any bike parts. I prefer to ride my $650 Sora bike rather than my $3k Cervelo DA race bike because I know it's all me on the Sora. (Not that the Cervelo helps much, honestly.) I've been much more into doing it well on the least possible rather than acquiring schwag in the past few years. All about training. Ditch the pricey toys.

Were your first two Trek 1000's heavier or lighter than this third one?

Okay, (with much less snark) -- I think the lesson is to ride and enjoy what you have until you can afford/justify a significant upgrade. You spent quite a bit of time and money chasing your tail with this build.

Budget Upgrades for your Scattante build that will make a noticeable improvement:

1. Forte/Microshift 9sp shifters
2. Forte Apollo wheelset, or Titans
*I have the Forte 10sp shifter and they are between tiagra and 105 for quality
*I have the Apollos: relatively light and durable (170lb)
