finally, taking some interest, my oldest wanted to learn how to work on a bike, and of course the youngest wanted to help.

I like how you store the spokes-I might just try that myself
But is that slavery??Making her work on a HUFFY?

Awesome!
My son just turned 14, he has his own stand and tool chest in the garage and has rebuilt several bikes on his own (using my bike tools).
Here's one he did last year,

My youngest grandson fell immediately in love with this way to big Cambio Rino. The little fella often assists me with bicycle repair (sort of) and certainly with Bicycles for Humanity activities. He is, of course, much bigger now and rides his bike(s) all the time. But he never did get to swing a leg over the top tube of the Cambio Rino...
He is also wearing a pair of slippers (mine) that don't fit him all that well either.

Great photos and nice thread, too. The time we spend with our children/grandchildren is an investment in the future. I started back in racing motocross in 2000 to be with my youngest, our son, John, for riding and most importantly in mechanics. We would spend many evenings and weekends either at the track or in the garage together. Our daughter is like her namesake grandmother, she will tackle anything she needs to. Bike work, her car, her apartment are all fair game for her tools. I put her together a tool set when she went to college in 2004 since dad's and John's roll around tool boxes would not be available up at Smith College.
John is like me, anything and every thing is meant to be disassembled and put back together. You guys have made the best investment you will ever make, Sloar if they are half as organized as you are they will do just fine, two great girls there, as is Nelli, Finland's youngest long distance whiz kid!

Very nice Sloar! Congrats! I have two boys and they helped me wash and polish my bikes this weekend (they were not there the full time and neither at the same time, but it was a start, haha). I prepared two bikes for selling and the new one I bought as a keeper from CL that was really dirty.

Friend and her son came through the coop last week. He wanted to take a bike apart, so we earmarked a big box bmx bike as a victim.

Neat! I have little cousins whom I've fixed up their bikes and taught them safe riding practices, and a little bit of sporting as well. They don't like the wrenching much, but they can sure ride and turn a bike fast!

My "little helpers" are the kids that live on the street. As soon as we leave for the day, five kids and a two moms come to my parking lot to play. The mom sit on the stuff outside and read and the kids circle around through the parking lot on their bikes weaving through the old trucks and farm machines. One little girl about seven will walk right in my shop alone , stops me in the middle of work and demand audience.
"my sisters bike has something wrong with the wheel" I mention the tire is flat. "can you fix it and how long will it take?" I always fix it but she never seems impressed. It's hysterical.
My daughter seemed to enjoy tinkering more than my son. He loved to ride.

The "Look" on his face is even better than the medalist gymnast in the summer Olympics with the non-plussed frown on her face. Much more expressive and determined to succeed.

I've had kids on my street come. I teach them, and they help me. I told one about aluminum and steel and handed him my magnet, and he went to all my bikes and announced which parts were steel and which parts were not. He made each announcement with great enthusiasm. "These spokes are steel! These rims are aluminum!"
