True cycling friends like Joe are a precious commodity. I know you'll greatly treasure your times together.

Cherish the memories of this special friend. It helps to ease the pain of losing him. You can be there to help his family through this.

I can commiserate having lost someone just like him recently. He was only 5 days into retirement when he had a massive heart attack. His memorial service was so crowded with friends and coworkers that I couldn't get into the large room where it was held. Sometimes it leaves a hole that can't be filled.

I feel your pain. I have lost (all are dead now) five of my best friends now and I'm only 55!

I want to thank you all for you kind comments. We laid Joe to rest yesterday, and while sad, it was a celebration of his life. While his wife and son will be heartbroken for some time to come, they are surrounded by those who love and care for them. For me, his smile and laugh are forever embedded in my memory.

When someone says 'see you tomorrow,' I used to say 'oh you never know.' Some interesting conversations started from that. I've known 2 people so far who went home from work, and didn't come back the next day because they weren't around any more.

Another person had a heart attack on the job and died right in the office. He was 10 years younger than me and this was about 15 years ago. He was also the person I had the most respect for in the whole building.

But the people are still around in another way. They live in your memory for as long as you are alive. My closest relative, a kid sister 17 years younger than me left suddenly. I still feel appreciation and gratitude for the time with her, and the practical benefits of knowing her.
