Went to an auto wrecking yard to get a drive shaft for my truck. They lifted the donor with a fork lift and torched it off.

I just came here to say, "buyer got a nice deal!"

I'd pay $28 any day of the week for that entire bottom-end...

It sold for $19! Someone got a great deal.

By coincidence, I purchased what I assume are the remainder of the usable components from that bike.

Same seller. Simplex RD, Dura Ace FD, Simplex DT shifters.

Actually, it didn't come with a head badge, and the one I put on there doesn't quite match the era of the head tube, but I like the look. I did put the fork on my '69 Super Course as the one original to that bike is a bit tweaked. This one that came with the head tube seems well aligned.
Seal the tubes and the bottom and make it a vase?

A friend told me when he worked in a big electric generator plant, they used to change engines/alternators often. As the base plate had a lot of bolts, they'd rather torch off the plate and weld another generator with torched plate they had in spare.

There was no disclaimer in the listing like: "tubing chunks not included", so you never know.
We'll have to wait until the parts arrive in the mail.

A follow-up

I've emailed the seller of the crank regarding my purchase (other parts from the same bike) and mentioned that he had
achieved some notoriety on this board for the crankset listing. Here's his response:

"I am not surprised that the bike community would have a problem with cutting up the bike but here is the deal.

I tried for months to sell the bike complete for $75 but no takers in-fact it would cost more than $50 to ship it so because the frame was not a pro frame I cut it up. I did not have the tools to disassemble the cranks without hiring them so I cut up the frame.

Life is tough sometimes and you can't save every bike.

If you want to post this response on the blogs you have my permission."

In my emails, he seemed like a cordial, thoughtful gentleman, so I am inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Yes, sometimes, an action that seems irrational isn't from the perspective of the actor. As some here have pointed out, it looks crazy, but maybe it isn't.

+10 Savings on shipping would pay for a simple crank puller. And he then could have donated the frame set to his favorite charity/co-op/neighbor.

And it does leave questions around whether crank arm threads are stripped. L A Z Y trumped common sense.

That's about a two minute job with a sawzall. If I were looking for these parts I would appreciate this, much better than some ham handed idiot wrenching on it.

+1, I just don't get the debate or anybody's objection. The seller made a decision that suited his convenience, and you'd think he committed a mortal sin.

In case you're not being facetious

First of all because it's a much harder job to cut though a hardened spindle vs. some thinwall tubing. Secondly the spindle was a functioning part of what he was selling whereas the frame was destined for the bin anyway.

IMO - the sellers decision to cut the frame was logical and made sense from his perspective. Others might have done differently, but that doesn't make him wrong.

True,
It is just a funny way to disassemble and display the parts.

With the bottom bracket (or any bearing), few sellers seem to want to disassemble to give a close inspection of the condition of the cones and races.

I suppose, if the cones and races are in perfect condition (and the seller wants to represent them as such), the price may go up. But, if the seller writes that the cones or races are shot... the value plummets.

So, most sellers choose to just sell parts as mystery parts.
