Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have a big-ass melon head. Giro Bishop and Bontrager Starvos XL work great for me.

I'm sure he did. But the thread was resurrected today, several posts up, by JagR who is also searching for a big helmet.

I have a size 8 head, like a watermelon. Lazer O2 was my best fit until recently I found the POC Octal and it is pure pleasure. Ugly as sin, but I love the fit and I'm not going back. My friends are having a great time with my new mushroom look.

I'm in the sz 8 club, Savant fits well. Has plenty of room for a thick beanie if the need ever arises.

63cm here; Specialized Prevail says it goes up to a 63cm, and I must say it fits me perfectly. The Propero II also fit very well; haven't tried the more recent Propero III.

Thank you for all the insight!

I am still shopping but as an update...
- KASK - no model fits my dome
- SWorks PreVail II - fits but I am not in love w/the looks

From what I gather, looks might have to get pushed aside do to lack of options!

FYI - GIRO has fit in the past but unsure in the current line. LBS are carrying less and less stick which makes online...due to size/shape I am hesitant.

Trimming
Yes, I trimmed a couple of the styrofoam ribs on my new helmet and on the previous one. Helmets usually rub the top of my forehead just above the helmet's pads. And there's often molding marks in the bare foam that make the rubbing worse, too.

I only had to take off a couple of mm on the rib. So it doesn't seem to be compromised significantly.

I used a dremel with a round ball grinding head, running at minimal speed. Then smoothed it with 220 sandpaper. Instead, trimming by hand sanding with 80 or 120 sandpaper would probably work just as well -- styrofoam is soft.

Adding custom padding
Years ago, I got a roll of Frost King 3/4 inch wide x 7/16 thick foam weatherstripping, and recently used pieces from the same roll on my new helmet. This foam is highly compressible, you can squish it down almost flat with your fingers, then it springs back into shape. So it works great on helmet hotspots that aren't covered by the stock helmet pads.

A strip of this foam over the trimmed rib made the helmet fit comfortably.

I've used the same foam on the sides of an older helmet that was too wide on my head.

Laser O2 helmet

The O2 size XL is slightly larger than my older Bell Ghisallo in Large. And the O2 comes in XXL, too.

Has anyone ever tried the GIRO SYNTHE MIPS? A few reviews say that the MIPS makes the helmet feel a little smaller?

Due to some connections that I have, I got a Smith Overtake helmet last year in size L. It looks a little different than the usual bicycle helmet - which I like and it fits well. Not sure of my size in MM but have historically needed a 7 3/4 motorcycle helmet. The specs say that a size L goes up to 62.

I have a huge and round Asian head and I tried a LOT of helmets. The only one that semi-fit was the Giro Savant. But it wasn't completely comfortable. I ended up ordering a XXXL helmet from Amazon Japan. The helmet is the Kabuto Steair which is designed for rounder Asian heads. BTW, I used Tenso and they shipped the helmet to me.

Big head club member. Specialized and Laser XL sizes do not work for me -- head is not round enough and the helmets press against the center of the forehead while leaving too much room on the sides and generally looking stupid. I have had luck most recently with Bontrager helmets.
