Your pick: Jamis Renegade C2 vs Topstone Carbon?
I'm in a pinch to make a decision so asking for your help. If it was your only bike, which of these would you prefer and why? Will be used on gravel and road.

Jamis. Though I would go with the Escapade myself, steel is real!
Never really been a huge Crackandfail fan aside from their original track bike which is a pretty bike.
The reason for Jamis, more mounting points for bottle/anything cages, GRX groupset (which is designed for the gravel bikes) and no goofy rear suspension.

Yes! I was actually considering the s1, gorgeous looks, steel and only .75lbs heavier than s2. https://www.jamisbikes.com/usa/renegades1.html
But my worry is about the 1x, it's my only bike so not sure if 40T is gonna cut it. Thoughts??

I'd go with the Jamis(surprise!).
Why? I can't climb on something that's fugly.....started back in my teenage years when I discovered there was more than bikes to ride.

Yup....the frame tubes are out of wack and that rear end is messed up! There's a saying about how "it's fun riding one until your friends find out"....something like that

Also know that due to the rear suspension design, the carbon Topstone rear wheel has a special dish to it. If you ever order a different set of wheel, an LBS would need to redish the new wheels.
I personally think the suspension is wonky as well, and the dish thing just odd. Note I have an aluminum Topstone, it’s a different bike, and better IMO.

Well, as an owner of 2018 Escapade I'll vote for Jamis, of course. :-)
Proper full Shimano gravel groupset (unlike Cannondale that doesn't have 105 crank), mount points, looks IMHO way better.
I can tell you right away where Jamis saved money:
- wheels: I bet they will be heavy - mine are ~ 2100 g + these wheels use outdated 6-bolt mounts for discs;
- crank: GRX FC-RX600, 46/30T instead of GRX FC-RX810 48/31T;
- cassette: 105 instead of Ultegra (doesn't matter much, just a slight weight penalty - and once it wears out you'll need to replace it anyway).
As for 1x with 40T: for me such bike will be unusable on the road - 40x11 highest gear is WAY too low.

I think so too! I'm all in for C2 -- what about 46/30 there, do you think that's good enough for road riding/my only bike?. I do love the look of the S1 but you're right the gearing doesn't seem super versatile.

I'd go with the S2 and use the savings to change the gearing. The wheels (biggest expense) appear to be the same on the C2 as the S2 anyway.

46x11 at 90 rpm is about 30-31 mph (depending on tire size), so it should be enough except for fast descents - you'll spin out. IMHO it is a good all around gearing. Not for road racing though.

For me personally I would want at least a 2x if it is my only bike ever but I don't know what only bike is? That does not compute. I would get the 1x and see how it feel and if you need to change it you can get a 2x GRX crank or a ton of other options like my personal favorite White Industries GR30 cranks and I can get whatever gear combo I want (within some small limits).

To clarify, I mean this will be my do-all bike for the next couple years. I will commute, road, bikepack, and gravel ride on this one bike (not budgeting to buy a second bike anytime soon). Do you think spending the extra 200$ + replacing the gearset to make it more versatile is worth it? Compared to just buying the c2 which is bit cheaper and has 46/30 already.. I wish there was someone who owned one on this forum too

Post in the gravel forum- there are some renegade owners.
I always default to steel, but jamis oddly made all their 631 steel builds 1x. Absurd.
if you are going to change out the drivetrain, just buy the steel frameset and build it up. You get what you want the first time and don't have to change the wheels, crank, shifters, brakes, bar tape, and saddle(assume you will since its common).
