Late 1960s Frejus Pickup

Got this frameset with some parts yesterday. Universal 61 center pull brakes, Campy headset, crankset and pedals, Huret DT shifters, and newer Shimano derailleurs. Campy drop outs.

Only chrome is the fork crown. Serial number puts it in the 1968/1969 timeframe (9ii R). Rear brake braze ons under top tube, cable guide braze ons on top of BB shell.

Paint is more than good enough for my patina rule. OA bath coming for the fork crown. I'll have to see if I have any pedal end caps, won't have the correct ones, but I should have something.

I'll pull some Record and NR parts, looks goofy with the Shimano stuff. May not have appropriate seat post.

Rebuild will have to wait while I travel a bit.


I'm thinking this is a Super Corsa, but I am not knowledgeable with this brand.


Stem not stuck! Lucky break here!


Light rust on fork crown, no blistering. So it should take to OA treatment well.

Nice! That should clean up well and that rust is minimal given the age of the bike. I don’t have any knowledge to share but I’ve seen quite a few on this forum. I’m sure someone can give you the model of Frejus this is. They are very nice bikes by the looks of the ones I’ve seen. I look forward to updates.

Wonderful find! I don't really have a grail bike, but if I did, it probably would be Frejus. I saw two in person and have admired them ever since. There used to be a dealer in my town that sold them back in the '60s and '70s. Interesting story. When I found the shop it was being run by two brothers whose father had started the business and had passed. Both brothers were fun to talk with and they had some vintage parts laying around which I was able to purchase for very reasonable prices. One day I walk in and boom, a gorgeous Frejus track bike is sittiing on the sales floor. I immediately began drooling. It was near mint condition. Unfortunately it was not for sale. One of the brothers had bought it back from a former customer who had purchased it when it was new. This person rarely rode it and only in fair weather, etc. Like I said, it was near-perfect. Turns out the one brother had always regretted not keeping a Frejus for himself and this one fell into his lap and he wanted to keep it. Oh well, just my luck.

Maybe I really do have a grail bike?

thanks very much for sharing this most excellent intake

the 3TTT Gran Prix stem and 144BCD fit right in with serial dating

curious that it is fitted with a Zeus pump holder

cannot tell from photos: did it come with the Gaslo HB caps or are they REG?

original HB wrap was likely white

original cable casing was likely silver

will be interesting to see how much of the red colour of the finish comes back with redd up (ole Mr. Sol hath been at work here)

Sun fade is OK with me, as I like patina. 1980s Shimano derailleurs have to go, they are already in the donate box. I will use some polishing compound on the paint, we will see how the red turns out.


Funny story, seller told me first potential buyer passed on this bike, turned up his nose, declaring it was a "French bike and I only buy Italian bicycles".....Meanwhile, I thought it was French when I picked it up. I like French bikes too so no problem. We were both wrong, but one of us was also s t u p i d.

Too small for me, so you just keep it. 😁 That's an interesting lug, with windows, no less, where the seat tube & tt come together. I wonder what those old decals showed? 🤔

Main difference is chrome, or the lack of. No chrome stays, no chrome socks, no chrome head lugs.

Just weighed the frame and fork: 6.50 pounds.

I have an old 27.0 TTT seat post, fits well. I also have a 27.2mm Campy, too tight. The TTT looks better regardless. I did give the ST a light hone first.

Been thinking about white bar tape/cable housing. First, I already have it in hand. Second, it looks sharp on your bike. I will probably put an old Brooks saddle on it, also laying around.



On the steer tube, only marking I could find: MC 56. Measured frame to be 55cm CTT.

I've since removed crown race. Fork is going into the OA bath over night.

First polish, looks good from five feet away.

First picture is a before picture, wow, this bike was nasty.

Overall frameset. Fork is now in the acid bath.

colour suggestion -

if you elect to go with white for hb wrap and cable casing suggest to seek out an antique white/off-white

if you go with a bright white it will "pop" giving the overall machine the dreaded "worked-on" look

Waiting it's turn, just pulled it out for some work. Got to dig out a vintage leather saddle. I'm liking how that seat post looks.

Not so.
Frejus bicycles were made in Torino until the company was bought by Emilio Bozzi.
It has been suggested that the name originated from the proximity of the shop to a monument to workers who were killed building the Frejus tunnel.

FREJUS, home
Production was moved from Torino to Milano, to the best of my knowledge, in 1951. There are several Torinese I know of who do not care much at all of the Milanese-made Frejus.

I wish you Frejus owners would petition for a "Show off your Frejus" sticky. I started racing on a Helyett in 1964, but I remember ogling the Frejus bikes I'd see at the local bike dealer and around town in New Haven. In the 1960s, anyway, to me they were the prettiest bikes around.

And the range of their combinations of contrasting paint and decal colors was seemingly endless. Whoever was coming up with those combinations had bold but impeccable taste.

Edited to add an example at this page. Who would have thought these colors would work together?
