I had my share of misery as a ute but I had the same girlfriend from 18-23. Off and on at times but when the "I want to get married" thing started I ran for the hills. It could have worked in time but I couldn't take the almost daily pressure to commit to marriage. Especially since she said she wanted to get hitched before her drunk-ass mother died.
My first devastating heartbreak was @25. Of course, I was an alky at the time, so I poured a depressant onto the depression. Did the same thing the next time and that's when I got really sick. Quit drinking and had to cope with my emotions unassisted by chemistry.

My one Brush With Greatness in cycling in the Bay Area was one time when I was riding up West Old La Honda, which is a nice climb, largely empty, with great views out to the Pacific, which you can't see because it's all behind you. Anyway, I had just started up the climb and a woman in team kit rides up next to me (or I to her, I don't remember) and we rode together up to the top. Then she went DOWN East OLH, and I'm not nearly a good enough descender for that. While we were riding together, I stole a peek at the name on her top tube. Shari Kain. Two-time National Cyclocross Champion.

A lot of the racers, including my friend, use cheap cx bikes. The weight isn't a big deal and you don't mind trashing them in a mud race. Here, there aren't many mud races but they do happen. The promoters provide hoses/wash areas so you can at least rinse off before you put the thing, and yourself, back in the car.
The races are short, 30 or 45 minutes, but you can enter more than one per day. It's quite a different atmosphere than a crit. Lots more laughing and spectator participation.
My friend Roger does the single speed race and the regular old guy race, too.

Why has he been off the bike? I know she has a ton going on besides 'cross. She has those ride clinics for kids, bike advocacy things, etc.

Jeff has been doing minor construction projects and handyman type work, and has been super busy with that. We had him at our place for a couple of weeks not long ago. My typical ride routes take me by their house, and when I see him outside, I bark at him to go ride his bike. It hasn't happened yet.

Back in 1996 or so I attended a bike club weekend in Thurmont, MD. For some reason I went to a grocery store and ended up comparing the various brands of scrapple for sale. Some had pig snouts. Other had big liver. Etc. Made me wonder if swore consumers swore by brands based on their ingredients.

I need to get better at listening to my body. Yesteday I was so tired by 6 pm I felt sick. Fell asleep while reading a book to my daughter. Ended up going to sleep at 730. This morning my alarm went off at 3 am. Felt like garbage should have slept but still climbed on the bike. It was 60 degrees after all. Anyways I could tell by the time I got to the end of my neighborhood it was a mistake but me being stubborn kept going. What a waste.

On the other hand, nearby 84 is a high speed ripper descent, as long as you don't get a car (or motorcycle) in front of you. Recommended.
