Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Not a bad thing unless you can't keep Grandma away from the bank account.

My first devastating heartbreak was @25. Of course, I was an alky at the time, so I poured a depressant onto the depression. Did the same thing the next time and that's when I got really sick. Quit drinking and had to cope with my emotions unassisted by chemistry.
The summer she broke up with me, I also got Mononucleosis. If you've never had it, IIRC the primary symptom is just overwhelming fatigue. I think I slept 10-12 hrs a day.

What made her come back? She decided you weren't so bad after all?

My one Brush With Greatness in cycling in the Bay Area was one time when I was riding up West Old La Honda, which is a nice climb, largely empty, with great views out to the Pacific, which you can't see because it's all behind you. Anyway, I had just started up the climb and a woman in team kit rides up next to me (or I to her, I don't remember) and we rode together up to the top. Then she went DOWN East OLH, and I'm not nearly a good enough descender for that. While we were riding together, I stole a peek at the name on her top tube. Shari Kain. Two-time National Cyclocross Champion.

Glad you're still hear to share your story. A friend (not super close) died late last year after relapsing into alcoholism.

The races are short, 30 or 45 minutes, but you can enter more than one per day. It's quite a different atmosphere than a crit. Lots more laughing and spectator participation.

My friend Roger does the single speed race and the regular old guy race, too.
Dorothy and Jeff, who put on the So Cal CX series, live a couple of blocks from me. They're still doing it. I've been encouraging Jeff to get back on the bike again.

Why has he been off the bike? I know she has a ton going on besides 'cross. She has those ride clinics for kids, bike advocacy things, etc.

Dorothy is also a member of the Altadena Town Council. She's a busy girl.

Jeff has been doing minor construction projects and handyman type work, and has been super busy with that. We had him at our place for a couple of weeks not long ago. My typical ride routes take me by their house, and when I see him outside, I bark at him to go ride his bike. It hasn't happened yet.

Doing the NYD ride up Mount Wilson years ago, Dorothy and her husband/boyfriend at the time came up to the group I was with. They were on 'cross bikes with knobbies and she would go off the front and race with guys up the road, then come back to check on her guy. She was so much fun to be around that day and after the summit they descended the dirt trails back to their place near the bottom.

I need to get better at listening to my body. Yesteday I was so tired by 6 pm I felt sick. Fell asleep while reading a book to my daughter. Ended up going to sleep at 730. This morning my alarm went off at 3 am. Felt like garbage should have slept but still climbed on the bike. It was 60 degrees after all. Anyways I could tell by the time I got to the end of my neighborhood it was a mistake but me being stubborn kept going. What a waste.

Smart move, avoid descending East OLH. Too many blind curves, and too many idiots driving/riding uphill on the wrong side of the road.

On the other hand, nearby 84 is a high speed ripper descent, as long as you don't get a car (or motorcycle) in front of you. Recommended.
