I can do the pseudo-track stand. It's what I do at stop signs when the constabulary are around. I'll put my foot down when I see THEM open up the door and put THEIRS down!

Couldn’t do it for like 5 years after that but now I totally can

I want to learn how to do this. Please provide video of yourself doing it, so I can learn from you.

Running the stands at the local HS football/track field is a good way to strengthen your legs.

Is there an easy way to upload a video to bikeforums? Best I might be able to do is a picture, don't have a youtube account

I'm having a hard time picturing this, but it sounds more impressive than a track stand

Other cyclists won't take you seriously unless you can pedal out of the saddle while no-hands.

I assumed that's what he was talking about. That's why I requested video. This I gotta see!

Standing on the pedals, freewheeling, no hands, is totally do-able. Wout Van Aert did exactly that across the finish line of a CX race recently, after his saddle broke off in a crash on the last lap.

Wout cheated. His saddle rails were still attached to the seatpost.

ooh, no I cannot do that. I pinch the seat or tube with my thighs, I would have to change it up to pedal. Doubt I could.

I'm not sure of the rules for no-saddle-hands-free cycling, but you may be correct. You heard it here first, folks... WVA is a cheater.

People knock the track stand on demand, but I totally turned it into a job-related skill working at Cub Scout camp today. They put me in charge of the mountain bike program, and I introduced it to burn up a few minutes at the end a class after everyone came back from our trail ride. The kids were a bit dumbstruck after they challenged me to do it and I showed them.

We use gold spray paint. We have the golden bobber for the biggest fish award, the golden arrow for highest archery score, golden goggles for highest BB gun score, etc. I could do a golden kickstand for the best track stand, but I honestly don't think anyone will earn it.

I've learned a couple of things. While the ability to do a track stand might be a "parlor trick", it does correlate with long hours of experience on a bike, as well as excellent skills handling said bike. If you see someone that can do a track stand, take it as a hint that they didn't start riding yesterday and that they probably have been around the block a few times.

I also bolted aero bars onto my bike this weekend and have been learning to ride with them. Believe it or not, riding aero bars helps with your track stand. You can ride and sight over your thumbs and clearly see how much your body rocks unnecessarily. Then, because you don't have the torque advantage of longer handlebars, you learn to control smaller movements. You balance more and rely less on simply turning the bars to stay upright.
Nice to hear this benefit of riding aero bars.
Noticing the small things is important..
Thanks

I can do #3 as well as take a jacket/vest/gloves on and off while riding and eat/drink, but that’s the best I can do. Sigh. I have to face it, I will never be a real cyclist.
Same here. I'm totally inept at trick riding. I'm also old and slow. But I can ride for many hours at a steady slow pace and that might be my biggest cycling asset.

There are lots of similar posts to this, but if one prefers to ride clipped in and has to stop often for car traffic, it's very nice to not have to unclip/reclip all the time. I would have thought this was the obvious reason for wanting to trackstand outside of a track.

I also saw a bit of humor in the thread. The OP started out by throwing out some troll bait: "I'm concerned that people won't take me seriously..." (that'll get 'em!)
Then, the guys who like to quickdraw reply with some snarky comment and no useful content completely missed the fact that it's trollbait in order to get in first and start getting Likes from the other idiots.
