Averages
Maybe this is stupid but at year end I tend to look back. I am 66 (not retired,) ride a Canyon Endurance. I average 3,000 miles a year, spread over 85-90 rides and average (at least in 2023) of no more than 14 mph, maybe a little less. I would be curious if anyone here would like to share their numbers.

My goal is 5k miles per year. 5-6 rides per week.
Average speeds are what they are. Vary with terrain and conditions, and more importantly - intensity. I ride using power data over speed, and the speed is what it is - typically between 18-20 rolling on the flats. Slower on easy days, faster on hard days.

I do about 3k miles a year too. I’ve been riding more but get less miles on the mountain bike. When I retire I’ll have more time. Speaking of time. I’m beginning to think weekly average time is a better target. On a post somewhere the discussion was more than 5 hours average per week is needed before one sees performance gains.

Until the past couple years I averaged about what @Trek1100FeltZ5 did .... more miles and speed some years. Then stuff changed, rides got shorter, then less frequent and shorter, and longer rides got a Lot harder .... If I could get back to 3-4K annually at 14 average I'd be thrilled. Looks like the OP rides longer ... I averaged 10-15 rides per month in the better years, with 30-35 miles probably being "longer" and the occasional 40-50 or so thrown in. Haven't done a tour in some years---that would throw off the numbers considerably.

Varies due to responsibilities at home with aged parents and a home remodel.
Best year about 10K a few years ago.
Now? Maybe 3K this year.
I do not keep a record of actual miles until the past 6 months as this is less important to me rather than the quality and climbing involved.
Averages change with conditioning, routes (climbs) and bikes used.

One - two hour rides, probably 16-17mph these days. That's on a XC-style bicycle with 700x35 tires and 50/39 chainrings up front. If I dropped the tires to 77x28 I could probably squeeze out another 1-2 miles per hour, but why bother; slow it down enjoy life in the saddle.

66, not retired. Ride a variety of bikes, including a Canyon Endurace.
So far, 5493 miles. I'll probably add another 200-250 miles by year end. This is down from 6336 in 2022, mostly because of illnesses and travel that kept me off the bike about 4 weeks total.
About 180 rides Should reach almost 190 by year end. Mostly 1 - 1 1/2 hour rides on weekdays and 3 1/2 - 4 1/2 hours on Sunday.
Average speed (based on total miles on Strava/total hours on Strava) 16.5 mph.

I'm 77. Numbers are pretty irrelevant given all the variables. Things like terrain, wind, traffic, etc. But, my STRAVA history shows me what I did on a specific route on a specific date over the years. I will look back to see how I've done today compared to this time in past years. Even that's sketchy. On my favorite local roads over say 15 miles with 60 ft/mi of climbing I'm still in the 14-15 mph range when I have decent fitness. Gone are the days of doing my flat 1 mi STRAVA segment at 25 mph. hit that mark about 3 yrs ago. Haven't come close since.

71, I guess I'm retired. I have not worked for a pay check in two years. Since turning 61, I have 52,000 plus miles, about 14 mph average, and ride between 250 and 300 days a year. The miles and number of days are a lot more than had ever done pre age 61. I probably hit 3000 in a year once or twice, but not much more than that. The other big change is purchasing tools and learning to do all the work on my bikes, started in 2017. The 10 year goal and the bike mechanics have been big and rewarding accomplishments, for myself.

Just hit the magic 69 a few days ago. Retired at 63. Took a month off cycling due to vacation and COVID which happened simultaneously.
YTD stats: 5,460 miles, 242,000’ climbing with a 16 MPH Average speed. Should easily hit 5,500.
Just trying to keep up with Genejockey and failing.
Today my first purchase (jersey and shorts) from Neopro arrived and have to say for the price, I am impressed.
From today’s 45 miler:

Salish Sea with Olympic Mtns

Age 62, 5,200 miles YTD, 362 hours, which averages to 14.4 MPH. That includes hills, warmup and cool down, and traffic etc. 18-20 MPH on the flat.

61 years old. One year away from retirement. Average about 2200 miles per year. Speed depends upon which bike, but I am probably close to a 16 MPH average.

Still compete in local events and planning some usac events for '24 just to see how I stack up against my peers.
I'm active on Zwift, participating in wtrl ttt's and the zrl league as well as recently the wnybrc tnt racing series.

By the way, for those who worry that their average speed is subpar:
Some time in the '80s, I happened to ask a friend of mine about his average speed. He said that he didn't use a bike computer but just figured he averaged about 15 miles per hour on his training rides. (He mostly rode in hilly Baltimore County, but still.)
I believe that was the year that he was the Maryland time trial champion.

I've never known what my average speeds were. I just try to stay with whatever group I'm with, which is a lot harder than it used to be.
I'm on the bike 12-15 hours per week, some of it on a mountain bike.
69 and retired in 2019.

Average speeds aren't a good indicator unless you use the same route on roughly the same conditions and compare the rides.
If I'm practicing TT drills I typically choose a flat route, or flattish, and use my gps device to record the 'lap' as the tt event and compare the time/speed/etc to past training events to gauge improvement.
Same with hills climb training, intervals, etc.
They are different and the speeds are all going to be different.
