Unpaved + steep = something I don't like

Suffering up steep grades is one thing. Suffering up steep grades while fighting to maintain rear wheel traction is a "no thank you".

Traction wasn't an issue. It was dirt, but not loose. It was mostly just a slow, grinding battle with gravity.

had some great looking jerseys back in the day (road riding days)

plain jerseys for the short rides - better jerseys for most of the better / longer rides

many in our group had similar jerseys - including the older guys in their 70’s

they convinced me the jerseys were good for an extra 2 mph on the flats - and an extra 20 miles distance …

Friends had most of those. Did you ever have a Fat Chance bike? Friend had a Yo Betty. She was a tiny person and the bike was super light for a steel bike of the time.

no - I did not have a Fat Chance bike - the jersey was / is as close as I probably will get

I obtained some of the jerseys at the Philadelphia Interbike shows - would inquire / purchase late in the day when the vendors were packing to leave

but can’t recall if I got the Fat Chance jersey at Interbike though

What looks stupid to me are cyclists with dark tops and black helmets on the open road who are blissfully unaware of how their attire increases their chance of being hit by a motorist on their cell phone. Few riders seem to realize that bright clothing makes them more quickly visible to motorists any time of the day.

As one who's been struck by two texting drivers (once on a bicycle in the bike lane, and rear-ended at stoplight on my motorcycle), dislike.

Both clearly had their phones in their hand. Oh yeah, just remembered, got doored by an Uber passenger who also had his phone in his hand.
Texting drivers have changed the game.

here’s your one contrary opinion, I hate bibs. love Lycra/spandex/whatever cycling shorts. so comfy, no horrible straps over the chest and shoulders. easier to take on and off, more comfortable for me, simpler, etc. i use three sets of the Rapha cargo ones with mesh pockets on rotation.

When the straps are the correct length for my torso, I prefer bibs for overall comfort.
If the straps are short and they press tightly on my shoulders, I will only wear that specific bibshort for shorter rides.
If I have a choice to purchase longer inseam bibshorts for taller men, I will purchase them even though I am only 6'2" just for a better strap fitment.

The Pactimo Summit fit about perfect for me in the XL long inseam size.
The Endura Pro SL XL also have a bit longer straps that work for me.

Because of shoulder/rotator cuff injuries, I now ride more upright and rarely ride in the drops.

I would say when the logo on your kit matches the logo on your bike and on your paycheck, then you need logos of sponsors who are paying you to wear them. Otherwise....

Where do amateur racers who wear the kit of the local club/team they ride for fit in? Frequently those team kits are adorned with the names and logos of local bike shops or other local businesses who contribute to the team in some way (sometimes it's just a discount to club members). Those riders aren't wearing the jersey of a team they don't belong to, and they're not pretending to be someone they're not. Are they poseurs, too?

This thread reminds me of a story one of my "more mature" riding buddies told me.

There's The Morning Ride every Tuesday and Thursday that starts early in Palo Alto. Fairly short ride, pretty fast pace.

My Buddy notices another "more mature" rider in the group, riding a Merckx bike and wearing a matching full Merckx kit. Buddy rolls up next to him and says, "I'm glad I'm not the only old guy on the ride today." Merckx kit guy just grunts at him, so Buddy just rides back to ride with one of the regular riders.

Buddy: What's the deal with that grumpy guy who think's he's Eddy Merckx?
Regular Rider: That's Eddy Merckx.

I guess I got lucky. I ordered a pair of black bibs and they fit perfectly and are comfortable. I don’t notice the straps.

If they are getting paid directly, special treatment (discounts), or adorned with the artwork of the bicycle club of which they are an active member, then they don't fit the definition of a poseur. I can't promise they won't look funny, but not poseurs according to Webster.
