I only nod my head or give a short, half wave.

I care less what people are riding or wearing.

On the other hand, people will look at you if you're peculiar or different than the ordinary. So it depends on how unusual you or your bike is. Whether that's a good or bad thing is a matter of perspective.

I once saw a cyclist amputee. I stared for a moment but at his ability to peddle so efficiently with just one leg and no prosthesis or clips.

On another occasion, a cyclist had modified his bike 5 ft vertically. It also hard to ignore the loud stereos and Christmas lights. Some people like the attention and adorn themselves on purpose. Others may find it uncomfortable.

The New Belgium Tour de Fat went down my street a couple of years ago. That was a fun parade to watch with plenty of highly modified rigs like that.

my serious response

1) what bike are they riding?
2) anything interesting about their kit or bike accessories?
3) do I know them?
4) should I know them?
5) where are they riding?

If I stare at a solo rider like you described, half the time it's because I think I may know them but I'm not sure since they're wearing a helmet and sunglasses.

Get a clipboard and a card table & chair, make a sign, and sit by the road and ask each cyclist why, in person, yourself.

you seem to have time on your hands and need something to do..

Obviously they were waiting to see if you would wave at them. Failure to wave to fellow cyclists indicates you are not a real cyclist.

This, 100%^ Where I live we have a fairly close knit group of cyclists, and if I see another one on the road I am going to try to figure out if I know them or not. Which, as you say, is always hard when they're wearing a helmet and sunglasses just like every other rider out there.

I have no interest in other random cyclists. By close passing, i can tell they're usually eastern europeans on 10yo department store bikes.

They do have an interest in me, though - seems whenever i stop outside a shop i have to be prepared for an incoming conversation-starter, regardless of what type of rider they may be.

It's nothing. You should be confident and to ride past them in the best posture you feel.

I don't wave. I nod. If they don't return it, I act like it was just a twitchy muscle. We needn't go through the waving thing again.

Mine was stolen. Waiting at the bus stop to go home and some guy rolls up asking me if I want to buy a bike. I grabbed my bike with one hand and his shirt with the other. He offered no resistance just claimed that some guy gave it to him to sell.

Campy has a 12 speed group coming out if you all really want something to look at. Love, hate it, indifferent it is something better than another one of these silly threads.
