I called on this ^ about a quarter to nine last night, and the seller asked me to call back at 3PM today.

I am wise to that ruse, so I really didn't get my hopes up.

To be fair, why shouldn't he get what it's worth? $700 seems pretty high but it's definitely worth more than the original $150 asking price. It's annoying for those of us who hunt Craigslist for great deals, but that's the game for you.

I have seen it more than once on the local CL... a lot more. When someone posts a screaming deal, and gets 50 responses in a short time, the smart folk will do their research and then delete the ad or reprice.

Oh Yeah, been there. I chalk it up to the nature of things. If I catch the fish, that's cool and I get a good deal. If the fish gets away... Well, just keep fishing. If you caught them all; it would be no fun.

Way less annoying than the people who post a screaming deal and then don't respond to phone calls or emails until a week later, letting you know that it sold five minutes after they posted it and they don't know how to take down the ad. At least this way everyone gets a reasonable shot at talking him down to a normal price.

Knowing what it is worth I would have offered her $250 right out of the gate. Sometimes that works and you still get a good deal. Who knows though

I never ever offer more than the asking price because I have been "out bid" by guys who practice this tactic.
I REALLY find it very annoying to arrive after an hour's drive to be told "I sold it to a guy who offered more"

Smart isn't the word. Lack of integrity comes to mind, or failure to accept responsibility for his actions.

Call him up, offer $750. Have someone else call him up, offer $800.
See if he'll jack the price up some more, and get no calls.

If you really want to have fun, make an appointment to buy it for $850, and when you get there, tell him you changed your mind.

+1 Happens all of the time.

The really best deals on Craigs List tend to have no information. No picture, or a really crappy picture at best, no brand, no size, no model. The more sketchy the details, the fewer the calls the seller will get, and the more likely you can get a deal.

So while I have seen several threads where posters complain about the lack of details in a C/L ad, that is always my preference.

As soon as that C/L seller put Miyata 1000 in the title, the response was very predictable.

With the matching racks, its still not a bad deal, but would have zero flip potential around here.

Mmmmmm, well, I guess it depends on the bike but if it was a grail bike, then I would do as nikkorod says...I haven't done it myself but I can see the rationale behind it.

I think what is funny is that the seller in the OP has a very unrealistic expectation for his bike and that can be frustrating. He probably received 25 emails for his first ad and now will be checking through them again to see if he can get $400. If he had been a bit more savvy, he could have just emailed back each of the people who were originally interested and said something like "Hi, I have been offered $350 for the bike but, since you were one of the first to email me, I wanted to see if you could beat or match that offer.". That would ensure that everyone is happy.

Yep, mis-categorized or misspelled ads or ads without pics can often be a goldmine. One of my best deals ever was for a "banshee bike" that turned out to be a nice little Bianchi for 45 bones

I don't know where "around here" is because you haven't told us. But, I'm not so sure about how easily you could get $1000 for one.

There is a Miyata 1000 that nobody purchased on eBay with BIN @ $1199 that is now relisted with a BIN $1099. One recently sold on eBay for $225.49.

vintage touring bikes that are in decent condition and were of a reputable name/quality (i.e. miyata 1000) go for big money in major cycling/commuting cities. that bike in portland, chicago, san francisco, nyc would easily catch $700-1100, at least thats what I saw while I stalked Miyata 1000s for over a year trying to get a good deal. High demand, I suppose.

ebay and craigslist arent exactly the same.

That's the way it goes sometimes. That reflects more poorly on the seller than the buyer. The bike is easily worth three times the asking price. Somtimes you can get them to jump on it and the ad gets takedown before there is a bidding war. Its the same as Ebay really. Just one is open and one is closed. If ayone thinks Craigslist is an honorable place to do business they're kidding themselves. It like the wild west. Anything goes.
