Music while you ride??
What is everyones opinion on listening to music as you ride, mostly for the factor of hearing cars come up behind you, etc..

It can be enjoyable to have music, but its just too dangerous to not be able to hear traffic. Not to mention sounds your bike makes to let you know what needs to be adjusted/tightened.

i've thought about it, but have always come to the conclusion that the consequences outweigh the benefits, especially in traffic.

^ Indeed. Same here.
Just get a good song stuck in your head before a ride!

Guess I'm the odd one out, but I love listening to music as I ride
All "music=breathing cadence" aside, it just gives me such an energy boost and makes it a lot more enjoyable.
I do use noise cancelling ear buds, so its probably really dangerous, will probably change my habit

I listen to music 90% of the time when I'm riding alone, never in groups. Like was said previously, left side earbud out.

I listen to music all the time when I ride. I can still hear cars. Everybody assumes that just because you've got earbuds in you've got it full blast, which isn't always the case. You can have it a reasonable volume and still hear your surroundings (with ipod earbuds anyway). I can even hear my bike drivetrain. Sure the music quality isn't the same as if I were to turn it up, but it's nice to have a little beat in your ears instead of just my own heavy breathing. Usually the wind noise from my helmet straps cancels out everything else anyway.. including cars.

I would never ride with headphones in when I ride around campus. There are just too many people and cars and I need to have all my senses to stay safe.
If I had some non-stick-all-the-way-in-your-ear earbuds (Shures), I wouldn't hesitate to put on some music when I go for longer rides.

In traffic – no way!
When I ride on bike paths I listen to BBC podcasts, for some reason I like to listen to them while riding.

I don't listen to music when I'm on the road (and even that road is low use). However when I'm on a low use bike path or the like I'll listen but I don't use the head phones that plug into the ear and block out the surrounding sounds. I do want to be able to hear the sounds normally designed to get your attention but I feel not hearing the whispers is an acceptable risk versus my enjoyment of the music.
I generically don't wear the headphones when there are over a "certain amount" of congestion, especially if it is an area where kids are playing, lots of dogs are running, etc.

seem to recall we had this discussion yesterday.
I listen to music occassionally with one earphone in on the path side so I can hear cars coming behind.
Just because I can hear them doesnt mean to say I will not have an accident with the car but it certainly makes me more aware and makes me do a quick check I am not weaving up the road, not that I do I hasten to say but makes me check never the less.

When I have the basket in the back, I usually just put a janky radio in it and play that.

My lady friend in Irvine got a ticket in Irvine, CA recently for riding with her headphones in. I, some forty miles away have never been stopped for riding with my earbuds in. I think the safety issue is pretty pertinent but I am fortunate enough to live near dairies (I know!) and a distribution hub. The roads here are wide --like I can take a lane and leave two to spare-- and there are alternate routes to school/work that are not traffic congested.
What I mean is designing a route that avoids traffic has allowed me to ride safely with headphones in. I wouldn't dream of doing it in a busy city or on a busy road.

Not at all. The closest I will get is to have headphones around my neck with the volume up so I can hear faint sounds of music.

Often.
By the time I hear traffic I already know it's there. Hearing it doesn't tell me anything useful. I can't tell if a car's going to hit me or not by the sound it makes.
