New BMC Thread: I love my SR02!! And why is it so fast???
Got out for a lengthy 3 mile ride today on the new steed, one of the CC BMC Street Racers.
Wow!
I have been riding a Fuji Cross Comp since April, my first road bike since the late '80s. I have put a lot of miles on the Fuji, particularly considering my travels this spring and summer courtesy of my employer. I have been COMPLETELY satisfied with my CX bike, and am weirdly attached to it, considering it is an inanimate object.
But this BMC is fast. It is probably two, maybe three pounds lighter than my CX bike, and runs 23's instead of the 28's I have on the cross bike, but it feels lightning fast in comparison.
Am I just imagining this, rationalizing the expenditure, or should I note such a big difference? The frame is a bit larger, and is actually a bit more relaxed geometry than the cross bike. But it really seems to want to go fast - maybe the way I'd describe it is that the BMC wants to go fast, where the CX bike just wants to go.
As a noob, what are the differences that explain this feel? What is it about the two bikes that make them perform so differently? And, if I went to CF, instead of the Al frame, would I see such a difference.
I am REALLY glad I pulled the trigger on this bike!! And my wife's is due to arrive on Friday. Maybe I can have it built before she gets home from work!

Congratulations on your new BMC! Have you actually ridden the bike? You say you can have it built before your wife gets home.

The bottom bracket on the BMC is extremely stiff, and is very good at transferring power. The first time I rode mine, I noticed the instant acceleration; compared to the FPQuattro and Roubaix it was like a Porsche vs. Crown Victoria.
You'll notice the responsiveness of the frame and that's probably what you are most reacting to when you say the bike is fast. You push a pedal, and it goes.

I really like mine too. Still haven't had a chance to take it far since getting the derailleurs properly adjusted (I think). I had been riding a CX bike too (2010 Kona Jake) which I also like a lot, but this does feel very different. Much faster.
I have to get a decent ride in on it soon.

OP,
Congratulations and welcome to the BMCophiles. I ride each of my 9 road bikes and love them all. None is as stiff and responsive as my BMC Race Master. As soon as I took it out for its maiden voyage, I too immediately recognized how stiff the bottom bracket is. Ride it like you stole it.

Unless you post a picture of it, I don't believe you. NEED PICTURES.
explaination of above statement: I have recently become infatuated with BMC bikes and therefore need to see real world pictures
Not sure how long this will last. It was Cervelo's a couple of weeks ago. ; )

Here you go:
Not a great phone pic, but I still haven't had a chance to take a real ride on the thing, or spend much time with it. Really, really like it so far though.

Sorry if the new thread is redundant, but I was actually asking the technical questions of just why the bike seems to be so different in it's desire to get up and go compared to my beloved CX bike.
Well, the "lengthy" 3 mile ride was a bit tongue in cheek - it was hideously windy today, and even on the new bike it wasn't fun to be in that wind. So I rode it down the hill (had to pedal to feel like I was moving on a 38 mph coaster for my CX bike), and turned around after the runout flats and rode up it. I REALLY like the feel of the bike, very sports-car-ish compared to my CX bike. And the compact double makes me feel like I picked up two more gears. Am going to put a 12-30 on my wife's bike to enhance the experience for her after she's ridden it a while.
As to the advice to ride it like I stole it - I almost feel like I DID. At $1k for a full 105-equipped BMC, compared with $1300 at the next lowest price I could find for a similarly equipped bike (and more for a woman's bike), getting both for $2075 including shipping WAS a steal!
Didn't think I could be even more excited about cycling than I was yesterday - but I am! Being on a college-influenced budget (2 kids currently partaking), I am even more stoked that I was able to sell a couple of my guns and a boat to be able to afford bikes for both of us. My wife, who just last week used the word "addiction" in reference to herself (and who completed her first 45-miler at an event last Saturday), is gonna love hers!
I suppose I am completely over the edge. I just bought my new Banjo Bros backpack to go with my Showers Pass rain gear for commuting - I am really looking forward to getting my MagicShine light in so when I get back from my next road trip I can start commuting in the beautiful wet, reduced-daylight Oregon weather.
And here is the picture of mine - her's will be red (a requirement, even if it meant riding a tricycle....):

With all these white BMC SR02s being posted I'm wondering if I'm the only idiot who got a Red one?

CC now has all sizes available for the SR02, not sure if it is a mistake or what, I just ordered a 54 in red.
