Schwinn Tempo, phase 1.

Okay got her initially built shortly after she arrived here..

So now it's a matter of phasing stuff out till I have the bike I want, and then I'm going to paint it.

What would you guys do? keeping in mind I want to stay with SS coaster brake.

Edit: The end of phase 1:
Edit: Begining of phase 2:

There's not much left to phase out, is there? Narrower bars maybe

That is a pretty killer frame by all accounts, it should be a great ride no matter how you build it up.

Get ride of everything but the frame. Also know that that 80s Schwinn paint is very difficult to remove. Recommend a wire brush and 3-4 hours of time. Chemical stripper does very little.

Just sand it and re-paint. I've done the wire brush trick, it's an incredible pain in the neck! Only air craft stripper seems to work on super old paint, and then when you're done it ruins the smoothness of the metal. If you do sand and have pits or gaps, just use bondo on them. It works great!

I would recommend painting it metallic orange, just because that's what I would do...

I like the current paint. I'm actually in favor of drop bars. Great looking bike.

Even better! You could just touch-up the rusty spots and leave it. Think "rust converter"...

If it must be a SS for now, for heaven's sake don't remove the DT mounts or RD hanger. You may discover The Joys Of Gearing at a later point in life and regret doing so.

Good bones, it will ride well no matter what you put on it. If it were mine, I'd take it to the powder coater and have him strip and PC it in the color of my choice.

Drop bars, a longer stem & a more elegant crankset.

Good to see it finally showed up. For anyone in the save the paint crowd (which I am normally leading), the paint on this puppy is trashed. Frame is straight, former owner used it as a commuter and just didn't take care of it. This bike truly needs a repaint. Myself, I would be powdercoating it. Has a nice Schwinn headbadge. If I kept it, I was going to either go with orange or white. Orange, because that was the color of my 1974 UO8, which I bought new. White, because, well, I like white bikes.

Well I do have a 105SC group, which I do believe is what came on this bike. And you will be happy to know, I intend to cut/grind nothing.

And everyone, by phase I out I mean swap out parts either for stuff in my pile or for stuff I order... I was kinda leaning towards using some BOC bits, since it should be on it's way sometime soon to me, but it sounds as though that's just for amusement now.

Bill, somehow your pictures made it look better then it is!!!!!!!!!!!! Love it though, thanks a lot man.

I like it. I wouldn't paint it either. As is, it has street cred.

Powdercoat it white and get a black stem, seatpost, and binder bolt. Put a bow tie on the front.

But seriously, the first part.

I was going to put on a longer stem, but the reach is right, wheels will change whenever I have the money for better ones... the rest we'll see.

I just picked up its (shorter) twin. Same sad neglected story. Trying to decide what to do with it. Ultimately, i want a steel frame with STIs...

Nah, yours appears to be in a billion times better shape. If that's the condition mine had been in, I probably would have just cleaned her up and built her up. And I can relate on the STI bit.. I'm rehordeing my 105sc group.. for some odd reason.
