Shimano spd-sl cleat compatibility with spin bike pedals
Hello! First time poster here, so apologies in advance if I miss any forum protocol.
I've been using Ultegra pedals with the corresponding shimano spd-sl cleats for a few years now. My shoes are Gaerne and they are amazing. I love my whole setup! I just started going to spin and SoulCycle regularly, and the standard spin bikes are all Look Delta (or spd) compatible pedals.
Does anyone know if I can clip-in with my Shimano SPD-SL cleats into the spin bike pedals that are Look Delta compatible? I understand that if we're talking real pedals on a real bike, it wouldn't be optimal. I'm just wondering if it's manageable for short spin sessions. Seems silly to have to get a 2nd pair of shoes just for spin, but I don't want my feet flying out of the pedals either!
btw- I tried asking spin instructors and I just got a blank stare...

I doubt they are compatible. Have you tried it?
But aren't there bikes with clips and straps so you can use regular shoes? I've never been in a spin class that basically required people to have cycling shoes.

Yes, kinda. You can get them to clip in (the shimano SPD-SL cleats are the same outline as the Look Delta), but the shoe to pedal interface is nonexistent because the Look Delta cleats are constant thickness while the SPD-SL cleats are wedge shaped except for the tongue.
Source: I tried this when I made the switch from Look Delta to SPD-SL. I ran with two pair of shoes for a while; was checking to see if I could get away with a single pair of shoes.

last winter, I took my old pair of Shimano shoes that had SPD-SL cleats and replaced them with SPD cleats to use in spin class. Not all shoes will let you do this swap. In the club where I go, one side of the pedal is SPD and the other is the Look style with a removable insert that has clips and straps

Hello I just bought SPD-R PD-R535 pedals. And I was wondering are this pedals compatible with spd sl cleats, because I lost one cleat ( SM-SH91 which is compatible with that pedals). If you need any more details I will send you.

No they are not compatible, spd-sl cleats are much bigger, the pedal design they are intended for is totally different to the SPD-R range of pedals

My wife keeps a second pair of cycling shoes (her cheaper ones) with cleats that match the spin bikes at her office. There you go, no shelf space required at home.

Most shoes are designed to suit only one of the three styles, but you can get adapter plates.

You'll change cleats before spin class, then again before a road ride ???
I wonder what will wear out first ... the bolts, the shoes, the wrench, your patience for not puting the cleats in the same spot ?

Most of the spin bikes I've seen are SPD compatible one side, otherside clips & straps.
I've never seen any sort of removable insert on them.

The bikes at our gym have SPD on one side and Look delta on the other. They also have a platform insert with a toeclip on it that clicks into the look side for people who don't have cycling shoes. When I started spinning more frequently, I just bought a new pair of road shoes to ride outside with and "retired" my old shoes to my gym bag to be my spinning shoes. If you just leave them in your gym bag, you never have to worry about shelf space.

Buy a closeout pair of road shoes, some new Look Delta cleats, and be done with it.
I wouldn't use my good Sidi road shoes on a spin bike anyway, too much sweating from the stationary workout.
