Yeah, on the carpet is a horrible place to work on bikes. Nothing hurts worse than a cut piece of brake line stabbing into your foot at 2:00 am when you get up to use the bathroom.

Because bikes don't stink. Just kidding. I live in a one bedroom apartment also and the place gets smaller each time I get another bike/wheelset etc. I just say that the bikes are decoration.
